Tillandsia cyanea - How's that for a name?

Tillandsia cyanea is in the bromeliad family and is native to the rainforests of Ecuador. It is also know as the Pink Quill plant. I love the colors and the neat growth pattern of this little air plant. It is only a few inches high but it creates a bright spot wherever it is placed. The pink bract last for several months with the blue/purple flowers opening periodically but only lasting a couple of days. The bracts are relatively flat as you can see in the close up shot.

Just the coolest little plant I've ever seen! I'm particularly drawn to the lighting on #3, Carol. Gorgeous.

Nice, thanks for sharing. I used to have a bunch of Bromeliads until my dog decided to de-pot them and chew on the potting soil. This was well over 15 years ago. The large(r) dogs I have now get into everything. I may someday at our other home put in a green house for Bromeliads, Orchids, and possibly some vegetables!

Thank you, Dannie. I bought it specifically for photography but it has earned a spot on the front porch!

Thank you, Linda! I did these inside so I was able to manipulate the light. This time of year inside is my favorite shooting locale.

Thank you, Mike! I know what you mean about pets and plants. I have cats that eat plants. All my plants are either in the yard or on the front porch for their well being! One of my cats will even chew on silk plants.

Very nice great colors. I just realized what I am missing in props. I will purchase a peace of black
Construction paper and make a light weight 3 LEGGED stand to hold behind the flowers I find
In the wild. Thanks

Nicely done Carol. I like them all.
Know what you mean about cats and plants.
We have 3 cats and one of them always chews on my wife's plants.
We bought some special plants sold specially for cats to eat. They ignored them.

Wow Carol your work with light here is outstanding! An interesting subject. I love the fact that you buy and care for plants for their photographic value, we all benefit.

Thank you, Jim! I've had better luck with black than other colors but it is fun to experiment. Sometimes another solid color works well if you are considering adding a texture. I am currently using a black fabric background and I keep a lint roller handy to remove cat hair! If the black is a little faded in the shot I have found it is easy to make it pop in post. Colored foam core from a craft store works, too, and you can easily prop it up.

Thank you, Angela. It is a typical air plant. It doesn't need much water at all, especially with the humidity this time of year. Occasional misting and dampening the soil once in a while should do it.
