I am a bit skeptical of attaining sharp shots near full-out 3000mm. But maybe better shots (sharper) at 2000mm than the P900. Will need to read a whole bunch of users comments before making any move towards an actual purchase. Don't mind the cost if it'll produce.

I think you will find that 1/2.3″ means (1 divided by 2.3)” or 0.434″ = 11mm and that is the diagonal measure of the sensor.

I don't think that it's officially on the market yet, but soon. It's 25mm-3000mm range has my attention. How about you?
It seems to have some other rather interesting features as well. If it were to continue where the P900 left off, this could be a very interesting camera. Your thoughts?

It depends. What do you need a 3,000mm lens for? Do you need it because you are into astrophotography or because you just want to have the longest lens on the block? I look at what I really need for what I shoot most of the time before I spend money. If I am only going to use it 1% of the time, I save my money and rent.

I'm watching too...but will wait till I see the reviews and some actual photos. However, it does look like Nikon put a lot of thought into the design this camera with features, a nice EVF and making RAW an available shooting option. Image Quality will depend highly on how good the lens is and that's why I want to see actual photos.

You are right! I found a detailed table of sensor sizes and it shows 1/2.3 to correspond to 6.30X4.72mm with a diagonal of 7.87mm, even smaller than your generous 11mm. This sensor is used on smart phones and I find it had to believe that the P1000 has such as mall sensor, maybe it's a mistake. I suspect the size of sensor for the P1000 is closer to the APS-C sensor which is 23.6X15.7mm.

According to P1000 specifications on B&H website https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1423182-REG/nikon_26522_coolpix_p1000_digital_camera.html the camera has a 1/2.3" sensor. 90% of people are happy with there smart phone camera, some people are happy with a tiny sensor in the P900 and P1000. Not me. (

Same size as the P900. Very small. 1/2.3" (~ 6.16 x 4.62 mm)

But is ~ 6.2x4.6 mm...

The 25-3000 equiv. means nothing if it doesn't have decent photo quality, from what I've heard, the photo quality is pretty good. I wouldn't mind trying one out for a day. Would I buy one?...I don't think so, I don't need that kind of zoom range, but it is an interesting camera. Looks like Nikon has one up on Canon...for the time being anyway.

I doubt very much that any other camera company will even try to produce a 24-3000 mm P&S!?

I think most phone cameras have sensors that are in the 1/3" to 1/3.6" range. The 1/2.3" size is used by most Point&Shoot cameras.

I'm pretty sure the market will determine that.

If the P1000 sells like hot-cakes, count on others duplicating it. If the market doesn't want it, others will be glad they weren't first.

Actually it’s good for moon pics as you don’t need fast lens or high iso to shoot the moon.
