Tripods...Ball Head and Pan-Tilt and Fluid...Oh My!

I've got this one, pretty sure it is made in the same factory as the mefoto, love it and can't complain. Very versatile, can be a mono pod and comes with a clip on belt pocket that makes the monopod into a chest pod. I also have a Manfrotto and a Gitzo tripod, both bigger and less portable.

Look for a good used tripod on ebay. I picked up a good Manfrotto for about $50. It's heavy but I don't mind the weight as it is very stable in any conditions.

I go to auctions from time to time, and I have picked up some nice camera gear for next to nothing. Most of the auctions are estate auctions. I have several Manfrotto tripods as well as monopods. Are they the best; I don't know, but they perform great for me.

A used sub $100.00 tripod is not easy to find, but, there are over 4500 of them priced from $50.00 to $100.00 for you to consider.

I bought a Bogen (Made by Manfroto) 3051 tripod with the 3047 head at an estate sale for $50. It's no ball head or fluid head but it's good and cheap just that it's not light.

Good luck,
during your search time hopefully try to save up 50-100 more bucks and find a good one that you would not regret later on.

Check Adorama. They also have used/refurbed equipment. I’ve bought some refurbs from them and never had a problem.

Zomei is a reasonable stable brand with choice of gimbal or pan head, alum or carbon for reasonable budget.
Another mention for its gimbal design, it can be folded down to 16" and expand to 70", one of its leg can be detached and used as monopod.
I have the 668 version

Buy a used one. Look on ebay, your local craigslist. If you see one you like, google the model for reviews. Read up on it find out if it suits yours needs.
Go look at it, if everything works smoothly, buy it.

Thanks for all the input. It is quite amazing just how many "flavors" there are of a simple thing as three legs and a head. And also how many under $100.
I ending up settling on the MeFoto (where do the Chinese get these names?) Traveler at the $149 price point, but then there was a new open box for 135.00

One thing to think about is the value of the gear you are trying to support. If I was putting less than a $1,000 of gear on it I might use a tripod worth $100-$200 new. If I am putting $10,000 or more worth of gear on it I don't think spending $1,000 on a sturdy tripod would be unreasonable. This is just the value vs risk vs money spent side of it. I am not saying anything anything about size, weight, material or stability and all those are factors too. There must be a thousand posts on tripods on the HOG. There is also a good selection and factors tool on the Really Right Stuff website.
