I am looking to replace my funky old early 80's era tripod and started doing some research. Wow. There are so many choices it is astonishing.
From $24.99 pieces of junk to $1,000+ Gitzo's, there is a tripod for "everyone"...if you have enough money.
That being said, I don't. And with all brand and price snobbery aside,
I am looking for a sub $100 outdoor-use tripod that is light enough to pack-n-go with, but sturdy enough to actually be confident with.
Now, before you say, "...you can't find a tripod worth a darn under $100..." I am seeking others opinions of their positive experiences and recommendations in this price range.
I should probably add that I am not sold on the ball head design, and other's experiences with this will be of value with the decision process.
Thank you.

Look at the Tiltall. A classic for under 200. Good for lighter weight cameras and short lenses.
According to B&H they told me that the weight on the head is important. So when l purchased my Manfretto Pro Tripod l told them what l was going to be putting on the tripod and they told me that this tripod will do the job for you. The only problem was the color, black was more than gray and since all lenses except one was black l choice black. Gray would have been my second choice. Wife liked gray so she purchased a gray on.

I bought a Bogen (Made by Manfroto) 3051 tripod with the 3047 head at an estate sale for $50. It's no ball head or fluid head but it's good and cheap just that it's not light.
This 16 lb tripod hardly qualifies as a pack and go outdoor use tripod.
Both come into play. My suggestion would be to take your gear to a store with a wide variety of tripods and heads so can " feel them out"for what will work best for you. Remember your investment on the camera side will only be rewarded by the stability and reliability on the support side. I think if you can swing it, the extra investment will be worth your while. I have the Manfrotto 190 Aluminum among others which travels well in the overhead of a plane or even inside a suitcase. I think I've rambled on enough so good luck and good shooting.
At that price point, it dispels the notion that you cannot get one under $100 that's worth a darn?
Manfrotto is, but MeFoto?

Manfrotto is an Italian company.
I to am in the market for a tripod for making various images but quite amount of panoramas, I personally like pan and tilt vs ball heads. To do pianos you quite often need to level the top of the tripod first and then level the camera. So after trying to get an inexpensive tripod to do this I found a Nikon version at B &H that looks good at a price in your price range that does both.

Yup I know. I never take it anywhere. I take the 3001 out if I need a tripod.
