Orkney is the undiscovered corner of Scotland. At least it used to be. Recently it has attracted some attention, in Nat Geog and other places. Before I went to Scotland my first time, I asked a friend who had lived there for a year for three places he would recommend I visit. His answer: Orkney, Orkney, Orkney. It was excellent advice. The Old Man of Hoy, the Ring of Brogdar, Standing Stones of Stennis, Skara Brae, the Italian chapel, Scapa Flow, and all of the other wonderful places on these atmospheric and other-worldly islands. Go. Spend a week at least. Arise early, stay late.

We visited all of those sites! We had some great guide books and other resources to show us the way. We even saw some of the "off the beaten path" attractions such as Maeshowe, the earthen house, and the Churchill Barriers. We did quite a bit of driving around the mainland island just to see the sights too. The sun, like in Alaska, at this time of year never really set, so your days could be as long as you liked :). Thanks for stopping by.

We saw most of the same sites... however, we were on a more self directed tour with a rental car (driving on the left is an adventure in and of itself), a GPS, and an arm full of guide books. I agree that the Scottish are some of the nicest people I have ever met.

During a recent 10 day family vacation to Scotland we spent about two days in the Orkney Islands... not nearly enough. Between the neolithic sites, the landscapes, the architecture, and the people; we could have spent all 10 days there. While everything in Scotland is photogenic (even their run down buildings are beautiful), here are some shots from our time in the Orkneys.

I hope you enjoy.

.

Very nice Matt
