During a recent 10 day family vacation to Scotland we spent about two days in the Orkney Islands... not nearly enough. Between the neolithic sites, the landscapes, the architecture, and the people; we could have spent all 10 days there. While everything in Scotland is photogenic (even their run down buildings are beautiful), here are some shots from our time in the Orkneys.
I hope you enjoy.

Aye, Scotland is a photogenic country. I'm envious of your trip. My last trip there is where I really discovered just how fantastic clouds can be--Scotland seems to have more than her share of beautiful clouds--color and texture.

I think your images tell a nice story.

We've been to Orkney twice - you're right - two days is NOT enough time. Hope you can stay longer on your next trip! If you do it again I highly recommend "Annie's Place", a self-catering flat in Palace, Birsay. It's very nice, very affordable, and the owners are very nice.
Nice set, but I'm a bit puzzled with FV Invincible. Is that a fishing boat, a small cargo carrier or something else?

Yes, one thing we noticed about Scotland is the sky ... it is huge and full of awesome clouds almost all of the time we were there. They add so much to a picture. Thanks for stopping by.

Thanks Dave! Invincible is a fishing boat (in maritime terms, the FV or more accurately F/V denotes a fishing vessel). It struck me a quite photographic. It reminded me of the boats I used to work around in Galilee, RI when I was younger... they were known as "Eastern rigs".
Orkney is the undiscovered corner of Scotland. At least it used to be. Recently it has attracted some attention, in Nat Geog and other places. Before I went to Scotland my first time, I asked a friend who had lived there for a year for three places he would recommend I visit. His answer: Orkney, Orkney, Orkney. It was excellent advice. The Old Man of Hoy, the Ring of Brogdar, Standing Stones of Stennis, Skara Brae, the Italian chapel, Scapa Flow, and all of the other wonderful places on these atmospheric and other-worldly islands. Go. Spend a week at least. Arise early, stay late.

You're absolutely correct! I had to practically beg my husband to include it in our plans for 2015 - he ended up loving it so much that we went back the following year and I'm hoping we'll do it again next year. We talked to a young waitress in a restaurant who said she never wanted to live anywhere else - high praise indeed!
