You're right it's a malachite. I always appreciate good information. Looks like I will eliminate it as it got three times as many thumbs down as any other shot.
Heavy Photoshopping is not allowed. The rules state just exposure, sharpening and spotting. I have attached the raw shot and my exposure tweaks to it. Now, what I did to the background is Not add black. That would be adding something in Photoshop which is not allowed. All I did is darken it very deeply with Levels and exposure to subdue the distractions back there as well as darken the edges around the shot a bit. Not trying to cheat just take full advantage of the rules.
How did I maintain sharp edges at the tips of the wings? Masks. No prohibition against masks. Butterfly was taken at the Detroit Zoo Butterfly house.
P.S. Incidentally, I have incorporated a few suggestions that I got where I could. For instance, I did color correct the gorilla by neutralizing some of the purple--that's allowed. But can't alter the content of any of the others like the tiger's paws.
