I would eliminate either the tiger or the zebra Zebra mainly because it took me a while to process what I was looking at.... two heads and bodies intertwined.

The Zebras. The position of the two heads it almost appears that it is a two headed Zebra. In addition the necks being so close to each other those strips make looking at them a little dizzy.

Personally, the tiger image would be my first choice to cut.

I once read that the definition of a good photograph is: One that compels me to look at it for more than 3 seconds. Considering the 3 second bit, maybe the zebras are worthy of being included.

Another thought I think pertinent would be to consider who the judges are. Will they be photographers, artists, etc. or will they be zoo administrators, etc.? In the end it's about giving the judges what they want to see and not necessarily what is the best image.

They are all great images! My vote would be to eliminate the flamingo. I too, am surprised by the number of people who suggested eliminating the butterfly. I really like the butterfly shot. My favorite shot in the set is the boy and the Lemur.

The contest images had to be shot at the Detroit zoo on July 14 and 15, 2018. Light Photoshopping allowed: exposure, sharpening, color correction only.

I have to pick the best 5 of these (in other words, eliminate one). I'm looking for your consensus. Thanks.

Emperor Butterfly
Gorilla
Tiger
Toddler
White Flamingos
Zebras

Zebras aren't in a great posture. I like all of them, but would most likely ditch the zebras.

I had to go back and look at the zebra shot to really appreciate it. At first I thought it was a five legged zebra. Then I thought it was a five legged, two headed zebra....until I finally figured it out. That shot sneaks up on you!!

I would eliminate #4, the kid. It’s the least interesting in my opinion.

On the other hand, for marketing purposes, that is exactly the kind of shot the Zoo would look for.

Nice photos. All are keepers, but since the theme is the zoo, the butterfly might be the least "zoo-oriented".

Tough choice but probably the butterfly. The little boy with the lemur is my favorite. Have not been to the Detroit zoo in many years as I live in VA.

The butterfly is clearly on a leaf. That should be obvious! I did not know it was called an Emperor butterfly. To me, it is known as the Malachite butterfly. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siproeta_stelenes

My non-professional assessment: I would eliminate the tiger photo. That choice was easy for me. The photo seems incomplete. I disagree with many folks here who do not associate butterflies with a zoo, I like the butterfly photo it is so tack sharp and it clearly sits on a "natural" leaf. I love the composition of the zebras, it makes you come back over and over again. But my most favorite is the little boy with the lemur. It tells a captivating story and that is the reason we take our children to the zoo, to safely interact, as much as possible, with the animals.
