Stay away from both. Ordered a Nikon Battery from 42nd. Was contacted that they were out of stock, offered an equivalent substitute. When it took forever to ship, I got a phony excuse. When I canceled the order, they took forever to issue a refund and only after I threatened to contest the charge with Mastercard.

RD - where are you located? If you let the Hoggers know, I'm sure that we can recommend a nearby brick-and-mortar store, if there is one. Otherwise, I go along with the A-B-C rule, buying a large portion of my "stuff" at B&H with nary an issue. While I haven't bought from Adorama recently, all the previous business I did with them was very professional.
If you phone one of the ABC (and a few others that are recommended here) you will almost certainly speak with someone who is knowledgable, or they can direct you. I just spoke to a friend the other day, who said she "had a long conversation with the rep, and he asked me a lot of good questions, and finally recommended *a $25.00 item* that solved the problem".
I am lucky enough to live quite near a Hunts Photo, and another long-time photo shop - Concord (NH) Camera - isn't too much further away. They are great resources. And so is UHH!
Welcome aboard, and good luck
I recently ordered a camera and lens from Abe's . Got the camera OK. The lens was $135 cheaper than anyone else but was on backorder. They canceled the order immediately upon my request and didn't try and sell me another one. I also bought a camera there about seven years ago.

about same as Abe's. Spend a few bucks more and buy from reliable people like B&H, Cameta, Hunt's, Adorama, etc. They are not shysters who try to bait and switch.
Or Roberts Camera in Indianapolis.

I can't say enouigh good things about Roberts Camera. I was in the market for a Sony RX10 III to use as a backup because I really liked the RX10 IV. I went onto Ebay looking for a used model. Roberts Camera had an ad for a RX10 III in Excellent condition. Based solely on the comments on this site, I bought the camera. The camera is like new, peforms flawlessly and I am very happy. So, thanks to all you folks on here.

Run, don’t walk from these guys. Grey market, bait and switch.
Run just as fast from 42 st photo. Stop looking for the Best deal and just buy from B&H or Adorama; get a very good deal without any negative issues.

It's very hard to say which one of those two dealers is worse. Stay away from both. B&H or Adorama for me. If in the Philly area, visit Alan's Camera in Levittown. They also do mail order and are wonderful. Best of luck.
Have you ever heard of jumping from the frying pan to the FIRE? LOL

You do not indicate where you live, but the two [undersireable] vendors you mention suggest you live in the northeast. There are still some good brick-and-mortar stores you can patronize, OP have provided a number of suggestions. There is a Hunt's in the Maine Mall. B&H and Adorama are in NYC. You should look online to see what might be near to you that will not cheat you and will have knowledgeable people to speak with. Things I like about B&H and Adorama include honesty, good products, good prices, good service, knowledgeable people, good return policies. They will NOT try to talk you into buying something that is not right for you, and they WILL help you decide, even making suggestions to consider.

If you are picking these stores because they have lower prices than the usually recommended stores, there's a reason for that. Grey market, bait and switch, poor customer service. Any place that has substantially lower prices than B&H, Adorama, Amazon, etc. shouldn't be trusted.
An important point the remember is that the camera companies dictate the prices for which their products can be sold. That includes when they will be on sale and for how much. This is why there is little variation among trusted vendors. That said, you can still shop around for the best deal, because vendors are NOT prohibited from adding in bonus gear. So you pay the camera company's price but get extras that can add up to a nice "discount"! Once I got a WD 4TB external hard drive and a Sandisk 32GB memory card with an on-sale camera from B&H! You can also get a lens either thrown in or at a very reduced price. There are multiple variations on how you can save [just not on the sales price itself]!
Calumet? They went bust in the US. I understand that they are still in business under new owners in Europe.
Too bad. They had few bargains but good service and honest. They had everything for the commercial shooter.
