I was about to purchase a new 35mm camera system from Abe's of Main until I read the negative reports yesterday. Not even one positive vote. So what do members think of? 42nd St. Photo NY NY?

about same as Abe's. Spend a few bucks more and buy from reliable people like B&H, Cameta, Hunt's, Adorama, etc. They are not shysters who try to bait and switch.

I tend to stick with B&H. Never been disappointed with their inventory or pricing or customer service. Have dealt with them for over a decade and haven't had any negative issues. They have a good used equipment inventory and of course a very knowledgable staff. No, I don't work for them, just a satisfied customer.

Same class as Abe's....or maybe worse. Adorama or B&H are very good. Also, Samy's camera is one that I've purchased most of my gear. I live about 100 miles from the closest Samy's brick and mortar store, but worth the ride to actually talk with someone that knows the gear and you can feel it, try it in the store, etc.
Good luck with your purchase.

Both camera shops should be avoided.

just as bad. I use B&H for most of my photography purchases.

p.s.
Use the "Search" function at the top of the page to find discussions on these and other sellers.

I basically purchase exclusively from B&H.
They seem to have everything I need.

B&H Photo is a Reputable Camera store, based in NYC, Adorama is another Trusted store, Cameta Camera, then possible Amazon, Ebay, although those last 2 are not strictly Camera Stores.
I personally have never purchased from Abe's or 42nd street Camera stores.

If you are picking these stores because they have lower prices than the usually recommended stores, there's a reason for that. Grey market, bait and switch, poor customer service. Any place that has substantially lower prices than B&H, Adorama, Amazon, etc. shouldn't be trusted.

I can vouch for Cameta as being stand up with good customer service.

I'll add "Hunt's" as another reputable seller of new, used, and refurbished equipment. All of the others above are also excellent, and have occasional bargains that drop them a bit below the others pricewise.

Abe's and 42nd constitute an entirely separate tier. I bought a film SLR from 42nd Street, many years ago, and continue to be surprised that they are still in business.

You may be thinking of 47th St. photo, which was a reputable store back in the day. I think 42nd St. Photo may be using that name hoping people remember 47th St.
