I can't believe I did this...

I set my D7100 to RAW+JPG. RAW on card #1 and JPG on #2. Not sure why, but I did it. OK.

Then, yesterday, I took a series photos that somehow, magically, transitioned from RAW to JPG. So, the later photos are only JPG. And, not the highest quality, either! The mystery is how did I do that? It must have been me, as you have to dig into the settings menu to make that kind of change. I can't imagine the camera doing this on its own! Oh, well... I will be more careful today! (I now have it set to RAW on card #1 and the other for overflow. And, I'll monitor it in true paranoia fashion.)

Any ideas? Anybody else ever have this happen?

Did you do a reset after you set you cards?

No, at least if I understand what you want. I made the assignments, then took the images.

Could there have been an issue with the card in slot 1?

Not a clue what you're talking about, RAW transitioned to JPEG. Your RAW will be on #1, the JPEG on #2. That's how you set it up. The quality for JPEG is in a separate menu selection. I use the highest quality on my D7000. Each card will only have its assigned file type.

You likely hit the QUAL button and rotated the command dial inadvertantly while making another setting. That would change "raw+jpg" to "jpg basic" pretty quick and easily. No going into the menu system needed at all.

I have a Nikon D3300, I only have ONE card slot, and as a beginner, with only about 2 years now with my DSLR Camera.
(#1) I have NEVER attempted to shoot RAW, due to NOT having a proper Editing program,(Polarr) on my "Chromebook" Laptop that is capable of processing RAW images. So, I ONLY shoot Jpeg images.
(#2) The idea of shooting in RAW makes me apprehensive, mainly due to me being told I am color blind with REDS, GREENS, BROWNS, this presents a NO Confidence in my Post Processing ability to produce a accurate Image.

Images 1&2 are RAW, 3-8 are RAW+normal, 8-28 are Normal, 29-31 are Basic, 32-52 are RAW+Normal Jpg, 53 is RAW+Fine, 55 thru 86 are Basic. How these changes happened is a mystery to me. 😳

I had the same problem. My mistake was setting up the image quality option. Originally the JPG quality was basic. I decided to change it to fine.In the image quality menu I selected JPG fine thinking that that would only change the quality of the JPG on card 2. What happened was that it also changed the quality on card 1 from RAW to JPG. When I went back into the image quality menu changed to option to RAW+JPG it worked. Card 1 was again in RAW. Hope this helps

If you are right eye dominant your nose may be depressing the QUAL button. No other way to make such changes as the camera is not doing it, you are.

Probably Card #1 has failed in service or is full.

But, and I have asked this before, if you are committed to photography and shoot in RAW, what is the reason for continuing to record JEPGs in camera? And, unless you are shooting with 8 Gb SD cards, why set #2 as overflow? Even shooting a 2½ hr timelapse which resulted in 1600 RAW files of 26 Mb each, I did not come close to filling up a 128 Gb XQD card. If you had set slot #2 as backup, you would not be in this boat.

And, look, I say this out of due respect, because I've done the exact same thing. Shot with #2 as overflow and had card #1 fail before it was full.

Good idea - you don't need jpeg anyway.

I do use right eye, so your thinking may be the answer.

As a follow-up, I just got back from a session where about 200 images were taken. ALL of them are RAW, as intended. So, I can confirm that it is not the camera and it must be me that screwed up. Most troubling because I had no clue and it was my first experience like this after more than 10k photos! I will try to be more careful... 👍🤓👍

Perhaps the card, but, more likely, me. I always shoot in RAW, and today's session was great. All images were RAW. I think I inadvertently made a change yesterday, but how (or why), I don't know.

Good advice about slot 2 being backup. I usually have it that way, but in some obscure thinking, I changed. Back to it now, though.👍
