If you are right eye dominant your nose may be depressing the QUAL button. No other way to make such changes as the camera is not doing it, you are.

BINGO! I just tried, and sure enough, my nose pushed the button. And, when I used the thumb wheel, it cycled thru all the options. Duh! It was very easy to change from RAW to something else. And, would explain why I had such a random mix. THANKS!šŸ‘šŸ¤“šŸ‘

90% of all camera issues are "operator error". Glad I could help you with this one. Believe me, you are NOT the first photographer I have encountered that had this issue.

I always shoot raw and jpg both....raw card 1 and jpg card 2....i like the jpgs to look at quickly, and the raw to play with...
Plus if you accidentally delete the raw card, you'll at least have jpgs for back up....I did have one raw card fail on me with a couple of fav pics...so glad I still have jpgs of them.
Now I'm paranoid my camera will change it's settings on it's own.....thanks! LOL

I set my D7100 to RAW+JPG. RAW on card #1 and JPG on #2. Not sure why, but I did it. OK.

Then, yesterday, I took a series photos that somehow, magically, transitioned from RAW to JPG. So, the later photos are only JPG. And, not the highest quality, either! The mystery is how did I do that? It must have been me, as you have to dig into the settings menu to make that kind of change. I can't imagine the camera doing this on its own! Oh, well... I will be more careful today! (I now have it set to RAW on card #1 and the other for overflow. And, I'll monitor it in true paranoia fashion.)

Any ideas? Anybody else ever have this happen?

NO, but I have left batteries at home and also have forgotten to load a memory card. You are not alone my friend.

I have a D7100 and I set mine to Raw and jpeg . I never touch it. If Iā€™m close to filling up my raw card I put another one in . If you set it right it will not change.

I had the same problem. My mistake was setting up the image quality option. Originally the JPG quality was basic. I decided to change it to fine.In the image quality menu I selected JPG fine thinking that that would only change the quality of the JPG on card 2. What happened was that it also changed the quality on card 1 from RAW to JPG. When I went back into the image quality menu changed to option to RAW+JPG it worked. Card 1 was again in RAW. Hope this helps

Same behavior with D7200. Iā€™d wager that if OP follows this sequence, problem will be solved.

I have a Nikon D3300, I only have ONE card slot, and as a beginner, with only about 2 years now with my DSLR Camera.
(#1) I have NEVER attempted to shoot RAW, due to NOT having a proper Editing program,(Polarr) on my "Chromebook" Laptop that is capable of processing RAW images. So, I ONLY shoot Jpeg images.
(#2) The idea of shooting in RAW makes me apprehensive, mainly due to me being told I am color blind with REDS, GREENS, BROWNS, this presents a NO Confidence in my Post Processing ability to produce a accurate Image.

I, too, am red-green color blind, and shoot in RAW. I do my best in post-processing with color balance, etc. then ask my wife if the colors are OK... Seems to work out well, but if you don't have a wife, then I guess my suggestion is to find one...quick!

Hey, I don't use Nikon gear, so this may or may not apply...

But many Canon DSLRs (incl. some I've used) have both the "standard" and a number of more automated modes on the same "mode" dial. Setting the camera to A/Av, S/Tv, M or P mode allows you to freely change the type of file that's saved. But if you use A+/Auto ("point n shoot" mode) or any of the "Scene modes" such as "sports", "landscape", etc. those will ONLY ALLOW JPEG files to be saved (these modes also generally dictate the AF setup, picture style settings, possibly the white balance and more). Those are essentially "super auto" modes, waaayyy more than just "auto exposure".

Are Nikon similar? If so, for some of those shots where no RAW was recorded, did you use a mode that only allows certain types of files to be saved?

Using some other in-camera features also might prevent saving a RAW file. For example, HDR and multiple exposure modes are "JPEG only" in a lot of cameras I've seen.

P.S. I just looked at a photo of a D7100 and see the dial on the LH shoulder has Auto, Scene and Effects options.... Switching to any of those for a few shots might cause a change in the type of file that's saved. Check the manual... you might only be able to save RAW files in the M, A, S and P modes (same as Canon).

Sounds like you might have found the problem. If so, great! Does the Nikon D7100 allow you to change button assignments? Maybe you can prevent that from happening again.

Done it myself. There's button on the front that will change it for you well not change it directly but if you hold the camera and press that button and another one that controls shutter speed or f-stops you can change it and not notice you did. You will find them in your manual. Just look at the picture that tells you what the buttons do and follow to the page it is on.
