So, if you owned a DX Nikon and wanted to carry only three lenses in your camera bag and go from, say, 14 or 18 to 500 or 600 mm, what lenses would you have? Notice I am NOT talking about the trilogy lenses, but rather a trio of zoom lenses. Also, please don't talk about Canon or Sony or other cameras. I specifically want to know what you would carry if you had your choice of any three zoom lenses to carry with your DX Nikon. Thanks!!

17-55 f/2.8
70-200 f/2.8
200-500 f/5.6

Is the budget an issue? Lots are suggesting a 200-500 Nikkor. That lens alone costs more than most DX format Nikon DSLRs. Speaking of which, you don't indate which DX format Nikon DSLR. The base (3xxx & 5xxx) models need focus motors in the lenses and not all lenses have that.

All recent lenses (20 years) have focus motors in the lens. But the newest AF-P lenses won’t work with many older cameras, including those with focus motors in the body.

Thanks for the replies, but I obviously need to clarify and make an apology. Memory is the second thing to go and I've already forgotten the first; that said, I blew the fact the Trinity (not Trilogy as I posted) were all zoom lenses. That's the apology. Now for the clarification -- I was interested in what three lenses YOU would choose. It has nothing to do with what I would use or what I would photograph.

And again, thanks for the responses. I found them interesting.

There are still 4 zooms in Nikon's catalog that are not AFS lenses, plus I'm sure there are 3rd party zooms without built-in motors as well. Until we know what body they have and what their budget is, we are all just guessing.... I have bodies with built-in focus motors & as such have a much-expanded selection of lenses to choose from.

my 3 would be the 2 kit lenses that came w/ my camera "bundle" : 18-55 / 55-200 and my 200-500. however since I'm going to Italy in oct. i just purchased the 18-300. so my 2 (lol) would be the 18-300 and the 200-500. but if you want a third then i would toss in my 11-20 Tokina. my DX is D3300.
