Thanks everyone. I saw a refurbished one for $628 at Canon refurbished. Don't know how long it will last.

That's for a Version I and not for a version II.

A 7D was released in 2009
A 7DII was released in 2014

Those cameras share the first 2 characters but are worlds apart in technology.

EF is EF is EF

Any EF lens will work on any EOS body.

Any EF-S lens will work on any EOS APS-C body {a subset of above}

Except the 10D. APS-C lenses will not work on the 10D.

It’s a nice 100-400 mm 1:5.6 = something like that. It had a macro switch also. I put my husband’s Canon EOS 620 camera with this lens back on his shelf. The only thing that worries me now is the fact that I couldn’t take a picture anymore because the shutter button would not go all the way down, to take a picture. I put the camera and lens on his shelf not knowing what was wrong with it. Is there any way a broken lens could cause a Canon camera to NOT take a picture, or is it just some problem with the camera or camera settings?
It’s a nice 100-400 mm 1:5.6 = something like tha... (show quote)

Canon has manufactured two 100-400 lenses, both f/4.5-5.6 and both L series lenses. Is the lens off white? There is also a 400 f/5.6 that is also an L series Prime lens. In fact, every 400 mm lens Canon has manufactured is white.
To answer your question, yes a malfunctioning lens can prevent the camera from taking a picture, in auto or manual focus. I had this happen to me this past May. I was photographing on of my daughter's graduation from Nursing School. Just as the ceremony began my faithful old 28-300L IS F/3.5-5.6 decided to let me down. $650 later, it was like brand new again.

Previously, the lens was identified as Question about Canon zoom lens 100-300 mm 1:5.6 http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-487691-1.html

Mounting to a known working EOS body will help determine if the lens is the problem.

Take the lens to a camera store and test it.

You will enjoy the results from the 7DII, it's a fabulous camera. Most of the time I shoot with FF lenses and the results a awesome. Love my 70-200 F4 and also have a 70-200 F2.8. Use this body most of the time for action sports both indoor and outdoor. The 10 FPS for sports is a WOW...The 24-70mm F2.8 is also a great lens for this camera. I would not advise a 7D over a 7DII as there is a world of difference between the two, I have owned both.

I have a nice telephoto lens on a Canon EOS 620 (film. 1987 purchase ) and I wonder if the auto-focus telephoto lens on it would work on a Canon 7D Mark II or not? Does anyone know?

All Canon EF/EFs lenses ever made will work 100% as designed with your 7D MII. No loss of function or features with any EF/EFs lens regardless of how old it is unless the lens is broken on you 7D MII. So enjoy your nice old telephoto lens on the 7D MII.

are you sure you have a good battery in that 620 I have a a2 and a 1n and my lenses from the old film cameras work great has your husband tried that lens on his 7D mark ii. You need to see if it works on that camera if it don't and the 7D is working then it could be bad lens buy try it. You cant say a lens is bad just because it don't work on one camera
