You know, my out of this world light field camera has a zoom to 200 mm /1.0 lens attached to it. The lens has no f stops as depth of field is all handled in post processing.
If extra terrestrials exist, and why not? Some of the first things they would be aware of would be our early radio and TV. From the early programs, they would deduce that there is no intelligent life on this planet. Could you deduce intelligent life from Archie bunker, The Jefferson's, I Love Lucy? Nah!
I'd use a 55-300 zoom. A zoom is important so you can start wide and zoom in on the subject quickly. The lens is also light enough to use handheld and pan easily.

WAY COOL, Bobspez.
If UFO's invade NJ, send pic.s, ...... quick.
This post just made me almost spit out my food laughing! Awesome topic! I would probably have to use the Sony FE 400 f2.8 GM on my A9.
I also believe that I have as much a chance catching that lens as I do a UFO!
BTW- I love this topic! Lol!

This thread has made my day!
Did you ever notice that pics of UFO's always don't come out? I think the aliens can mess with the cameras.

UFtOs already did invade NJ, in 1938.

I don't have any experience, but I think the OP is taking an unfruitful approach. Instead of thinking in terms of the appropriate lens, we should start off with thinking of an appropriate body that can deliver the ISO needed to show the image is genuine. I have a Pentax KP - these SOOC JPEG images taken roughly a year ago show the it could deliver a recognizable image {my wife says there is too much substitution of purple for black} if I just have enough time to focus manually on the subject.

ISO 204,800 - unfortunately, Velcro, my model, died at the beginning of this year.

The best lens for photographing UFO’s is one powered by dilithium crystals. Contact Mr. Spock for further details.
I think we all know what the truth is. Any lens will do. The soft focus, motion blur and grain can all be added in PP.
