Dodge City? A long ways from Route 66.
Besides, isn't Route 66 itself a "tourist trap"? (And has been from the beginning.)
My wife and I drove Route 66 from Chicago to LA in 2005. We took two weeks to do the trip. There are enough sights that it would take two years to see everything. One suggestion: take good maps of the Route because many of the Historical Route 66 signs have been stolen. Keep in mind that there were many Route 66 alternate sections. There is no original Route 66. However, there is a lot of original sections to make the trip very worth while. Have a safe, fun and educational trip. Bring back some great photos!

Enjoy the "wide open spaces", light traffic, and the salt of the earth people.
Watch out for a nasty old woman on a bicycle with a wicker basket on the front.
Contrary to another comment, Dodge City is a tourist
town. Enjoy it for what it is,
if you do go there

I agree. I found plenty of photographic subjects when I was there... as, I suppose, is true of anywhere.
Know you will enjoy and "Get Your Kicks On Route 66" so here is to the original Mother Road and an original singer telling you about it...

Taking a two week road trip on Route 66 from Chicago to L.A. Looking for suggestions from anyone who has done the trip for stops along the way and any must see photo ops!
A must see is the Hackberry General Store on old RT 66. It’s in Hackberry, Arizona. Very cool looking old rusted out cars, etc.
With all your suggestions, we're going to need a lot more time than the two weeks we have. It's going to be hard to pick and choose our stops!!
I have done the sections of the old Rte. 66 in NM and AZ. There are many old and abandoned gas stations, motels, and stores that present photo ops. Particularly enjoyed the stretch b/n Albuquerque and the AZ border. In AZ don't miss Winslow and the La Posada Hotel. An old Santa Fe RR Harvey House. Great food and an awesome place to watch and photograph trains. And don't miss the "Standin' on the Corner in Winslow AZ" statue.
As it turns out (thanks to Lightroom for keeping track), I have over a thousand photographs I kept of Route 66.
