What was your shutter speed?

Rgrenader is onto something. It very well may be that the setting you changed to get it to work was under Custom Settings > Bracketing/Flash > Flash Sync Speed.
Setting it to Auto-FP enables High Speed Sync, this allows the camera to sync at shutter speeds over 1/250 (I've seen 1/320 too depending on camera model).

I am not familiar with the SB-700. My go flash is the SB-600. I use the BBF without issues also in TTL.
You mentioned that you have the camera set to various lenses and I figure out those should be manual focus lenses. I have never tried manual focus lenses with my flash so I am unaware if that combination will work or not although if you have set the BBF it has to be for your AF lenses.
There could be something you have set in camera but this is only speculations on my part. Perhaps Nikon has the answer.

I recently tried to shoot some indoor shots using my speed light on my D500. I was using BBF and my flash wouldn’t work. It would flash manually but not sync with the camera. My camera setup was; auto focus, VR on, and various lens settings. I was able to get the shots without the flash but would have preferred using it for fill. Will the flash work when using BBF. All contacts were clean and flash seated and locked. Any suggestions as to what I was doing wrong would be appreciated. Not interested in sarcastic reply’s.

Thanks

This is a capability chart with SB Flashes and Nikon cameras. Good luck.

I have the D500 and the SB-700 and have had the problem too. I'll bet the problem was not a setting but seating the flash. Revet above had the same issue. i saw that you seated and locked it. Some times it is too far forward or not far enough forward even though you have set the lock switch. Some times I've only had to push it a little one way or the other or remove and re-seat. But God, was it frustrating when it first happened. I couldn't get to work until the next day. It's never happened on my D750.

Well I guess at 75 I have a tendency to forget things. My flash now works and I forgot what setting I changed to make it work. Getting old is not for the weak. Feel like an idiot that I asked for help before I played with menu settings. Feel worse that I can’t remember what I changed. Ha

It won't work if you were using a flash trigger in TTL.
