Nikon SB-700 Speed light question

I recently tried to shoot some indoor shots using my speed light on my D500. I was using BBF and my flash wouldn’t work. It would flash manually but not sync with the camera. My camera setup was; auto focus, VR on, and various lens settings. I was able to get the shots without the flash but would have preferred using it for fill. Will the flash work when using BBF. All contacts were clean and flash seated and locked. Any suggestions as to what I was doing wrong would be appreciated. Not interested in sarcastic reply’s.

Thanks

Using BBF should have absolutely nothing to do with the flash firing - or not

I had the flash set on TTL. Any suggestions other than the old hammer fix.

Was the flash turned on, have you checked the batteries, was the setting on the flash in ttl mode. Take the flash off the camera, turn it on when the red flash button illuminates press the red button and it should flash. Hope this helps.
I use the 700 with BBF and no problem. Will the flash fire

Did you try with VR turned off? Because of the speed of a speed light, action should freeze for a sharp image without the VR. I checked the manual for the D500 and found nothing that would apply to your problems. This is just an idea you might want to test. If nothing else, it will eliminate one possible cause.

You were able to get the shot without flash? Is it possible like flash would have overexposed the image and thus TTL did not use flash?

I think you want to use TTL-BL for fill flash. Another alternative is just go full manual and use SU-4 mode to trigger the flash.

Well I guess at 75 I have a tendency to forget things. My flash now works and I forgot what setting I changed to make it work. Getting old is not for the weak. Feel like an idiot that I asked for help before I played with menu settings. Feel worse that I can’t remember what I changed. Ha

New batteries, checked all and got some underexposed pictures that were fixed in LR. I changed a setting in the menu but #&##&#### can’t remember what I changed.

I have a D500 with an SB-700 and this happened to me 2 weeks ago. It turned out the flash was not fully seated on the hotshoe. A quick removal and re-insertion solved the problem. Hope it is that simple for you.

I use my SB700 on my D500 using BBF and have never had a problem. Sorry I could not help.
