Canon 70-300mm vs Canon 100-400mm L lens

I have previously posted a question about whether the problem with soft focus was due to the lens or me. Several of you mentioned that the Canon 70-300mm is soft when taken at 300mm and wide open. I did several test shots and found that if I dropped it down a stop or two and stuck with 200mm or less, my photos looked sharp. But I was continually frustrated when I tried to stretch it's length so I finally stepped up and bought a 100-400mmL IS II and couldn't be happier! We recently returned from a trip to Colorado where I used it for my favorite subject, wild horses. I'm attaching a couple of my photos from the trip. As always, comments and suggestions are always appreciated.

Well done!

If you ever upgrade to a body that can focus at f/8.0 you might add the 1.4x III, this lens plays very well with it. I have used that combo a lot with a 7DII, 80D and 5DIV over the last 2+ years.

Lovely shots. I've been very pleased with my 100-400 even though it's the older version.

It looks like money well spent. Sometimes you do actually get what you pay for. It seems to be one 'L' of a lens, and is on my list! And not bad for a Rebel SL1. Perhaps a refurb 80D next!

I’m thinking a new body is in my future. I’ll keep that in mind. Thanks.

Thank you so much! The thing I love the most about the wild horses is watch their interaction!
