I'm planning a trip to Niagara Falls area later this month. Looking for any advice or insight as to any unusual vantage points, etc. Also, whether better to stay on US side or Canadian side? Appreciate any advice

Yep, you probably will need a passport. If you can, check out "three sisters islands" on the American side. With a low angle you can give the impression that you're standing in the middle of the river. Also, if you can handle the steps don't miss the Niagara Glen (near the whirlpool). It can be a full days hike but well worth it if you have any interest in the geology of the river. The Glen is the basin of the the ancient St. David falls. Walking there is the same as walking under Niagara falls except it totally dry. Some of the pot holes are fifteen feet tall.
Can't wait to see you photos.

PS: If you need a break from the crowds the Glen is the place to go.

Definitely go on the Canadian side. I have been twice when I visited Toronto. Last time I went back in 2013, I took the tour BEHIND the falls. It's dark and you're kept back a safe distance, but you can shout the back side of the falls. There's also a lower deck outside close to the falls where you can shoot from a couple of different levels. Only issue I had was that the spray goes everywhere. The car parked in the lot got a spray on the windshield that was tough to remove. Car wash helped. I've now been under the falls, beside the falls and took the BRIEF helicopter ride over the falls. Take lots of pics.

The best shots, and paintings, that I've seen of the falls are from the top of the falls with the water starting to fall over the side, and with the horizon near the top of the picture to accentuate its size and with and small aperture for best depth of field. Also a fast shutter speed to freeze the motion of the water and later in the day to get the "Golden Hour" colors.

Agree that the Canadian side is best. Don't forget to go high and get a picture from above. There are a couple of places that are right on the edge and have an elevated position. I was able to put my camera in an opening in the fence and get clear photos from above.

Bring your passports. Entry is checking on both sides. Why make your life miserable. Your passport is the only document that prooves who you are.

I grew up and went to school there (U.S. side). I agree that the Canadian side is very beautiful. Unhappily, much of the U.S. side in Niagara Falls is in terrible condition. Take other's advice given here and see the Flower Clock, too. But on the American side you can go to Goat Island and get "much closer" to the water. It's quite a thrill and there are some great photos of the rapids and rocks, etc. to be taken from there, as well. You can stand right over the water. Take a side trip to Buffalo and go the the famous Anchor Bar - the "Origin of Buffalo Wings." They are fabulous and you won't be disappointed. Use your phone to get directions. Note that my "profile picture" for UHH was taken with the famous waitress there. (LOL). Buy a bottle of their sauce to take home. Take your own picture with my Anchor Bar honey and post it on UHH along with your favorites from the Falls. Have fun....... Oh, yes, a passport is required both directions.

Don't take any pictures from inside a barrel on the river.

I don't think a US citizen needs a passport to enter Canada as long as you have a picture ID and citizenship. A passport provides both but an original birth certificate (not a copy) and valid state issued driver's license with picture would also work.

YOU NEED IT TO GET BACK!!!
