Camera bodies, red and black. Any difference?
Why would you want RED ?? No pros have red cameras
Why the guessing here? Red is just marketing and trying to stand out in the shops. The camera is identical no matter what the colour. Choose whichever one you like and enjoy. As for Chris T, sorry if the username is a little off, well people here like to bully him and bring him into discussions which he hasn't even posted in. Some do get annoyed by him, but this thread is an example of the kind of bullying you can find on these forums. It's quite shameful. Yes I do hope some are offended by this. To the OP, enjoy the merits of these forums, there is some good advice here. Have a good day.
Yes, the other one is either red or black!

). I'm thinking of upgrading my Nikon D3300 for a refurbished D5500 (looks more appealing to me than a D5600, and cheaper). I have a question that I'm pretty sure is silly, but I have been unable to find anything definitive anywhere else.
Adorama is selling a red version of the 5500 for $60 less than the black version at B+H. Otherwise, as far as I can see they are identical. Is there any reason at all why the red would be cheaper? Red means stay away? "Real" photographers only use black? Anything else?
Feel free to comment on the general plan (trade D3300 for D5500) if you want to, though I reserve the right to ignore suggestions of the form "You should buy ... instead"

It is more marketing than anything practical. Reminds me of my local gun store, they now have a counter full of colored small hand guns designed for conceal carry. They are red, pink blue and an odd green and designed to be carried in a concealed manner! Go figure why you would purchase a florurescent gun to hide!

My only question is; what is your D3300 not doing for you?

Well, the black is less noticable. Red attracts attention.
But, if you want to save and don't care about color, by the red one.

He wants a new, better camera. No justification needed.
It that a personal problem for you?

The topic of red cameras problems versus black ones was recently brought up by Chris T in another one of his silly threads, which is why he was referenced by someone in this thread. If you think we're bullying him then you would be wrong. He has blocked a good many of us from posting in his threads because we tried to use facts to counter his ridiculous claims, leaving us no alternative but to refer to him in other threads. He uses censorship to eliminate dissent which gives his misinformation credibility to uniformed people reading his threads..

Usually in retail, when a product does not sell well, retailers tend to sell that product for less in an attempt to sell it. In your case, my guess is that the Red Nikon is just not selling, because, no one wants to shoot with a Red camera, or, a lot less folks want to shoot with a Red camera. The Black Nikon is probably selling much better, hence no price drop like with the Red one.
But to answer your question, there is no difference between the red one and the black one, they are the same camera.
Do you know the story behind why Nikon went black in the first place? Well, in the 60's we young photojournalists were shooting in a lot of hostile territory both here in the US and across the globe. Those silver camera's stuck out in the sun like beacons and drew a lot on undo attention. Solution, we used black masking tape to cover our silver camera's to draw less attention to them, it worked. And, believe it or not, at that time Nikon actually wanted our feed back on their camera's. And we all clamored for a black model. Nikon listened, they started issuing black Nikon's. Now, they were just painted over the brass base metal and would wear off leaving brass showing, but, they were black, and they were a hit. And so the black camera became the PRO camera. And, you guessed it, the amateurs now wanted to look PRO and they wanted black too. And so, black became beautiful. And they still are.
You can have any color camera, as long as it's black.
(no, wait....)
I have the D5500 and really like it. However I really want the D7200. And I am betting that soon after you go to the 5500 you to will be looking to upgrade to the 7200. So why not make the jump now.
My wife and I both have D5300 cameras as back up (we each own other cameras). Hers is red, mine is black. ABSOLUTLY no dofference other than color. We both do street photography & her red camera does not seem to attract any more attention.
