I'm not going to tally the vote exactly, but it's apparent that more than 90% of us are uncertain of our skills and have to resort to sanity checks during a sequence of shooting.

What I would really like to understand is the reason why someone would not use the tools the camera manufacturers give us.

A for me.

It is interesting Base Fiddle mentioned a cruise. Because the last cruise I went on my wife and I made a point to have our photos taken at all the "backdrops". I was looking at the cameras and photographers styles. Without exception all were using Nikon cameras and every photographer (wide range of age and ethnicity) was reviewing their shots after each photo. I made the same observation at weddings. Old film days you didn't have that option obviously. I think that made photographers more confident knowing their film wouldn't lie on their competency.

There is no right answer to this question because there are so many different types of photography.

I'm definitely an "A".
I do almost entirely landscape photography. My work is slow and deliberate, almost always with a tripod; often hiking miles in constantly changing weather and lighting conditions. Very little gets left to chance so I check everything I do in case I catch something that can be improved before my light changes.

Call me a chimp and pass the bananas, please.

A - I look at the image in camera immediately after the shot to see what the capture looked like. Always download as soon as possible to post process. Can't image not viewing pics asap.

Bingo ๐Ÿ‘ "A" for sure with me. I always check the 'info' histogram when reviewing each shot to see if an exposure correction is necessary.

A... I chimp occasionally. Not very often. I've got my cameras set to NOT automatically display each image. But I also set them up so that I can quickly recall an image to check various things.

Usually I'm checking the histogram.... my primary reason for playing back an image is to check if my exposure settings are dialed in. The little LCD screen really doesn't tell very much about the image, though I'll sometimes use it to check overall composition or zoom in to check focus accuracy.

Most of my shooting is very fast and furious sports action. It's not uncommon for me to take 100 or 200 images in five minutes. At some larger, all day events I'll take many thousands of images. No time to do much image review!

I always download immediately... later the same day, maybe overnight at most if it was a busy, all day shoot where I took thousands of images. I can hardly wait to see what I got on a larger, calibrated computer monitor.

I'm involved in a discussion with another film shooter and while discussing the availability of reviewing shots in real time he said that he NEVER DOES. He said that he might go a month before even LOOKING at the images. He never chimps, never checks or reviews, never goes home and downloads the images into Lightroom or whatever post processing software.

I said that that's very unusual so here I am asking you 'hogs...what do you do? Answer by adding the alphabet letter that most closely matches your answer;

A.
I chimp shots at least SOME of the time, OR I take the card out of the camera when I get home or within one day and review images.

B.
I NEVER chimp EVER NOR do I REVIEW images until well AFTER the shoot date...like AT LEAST A FEW WEEKS LATER IF NOT MONTHS LATER.

Here we go!

I always check my shots using the viewer. I am a pro and I even edit out the shots i do not want while I do look at them. I shoot sports and events on my D7200. If I ever delete something I have it saved on the second drive which is my backup. I use the second drive in the D7200 as a backup drive. I delete or edit on the first drive only. The gain doing this is that when I go to my computer after the event or sports shots I just have to upload one drive to a file folder and since the edit is already done it saves me time.

I always take pictures and wait several months to review or process them. Doesn't everyone? So much nicer to see your Christmas photos in May, and your wedding photos on your second anniversary. You get to enjoy your photo safari all over again if you don't look at your pictures until the following year. When I buy new cameras or lenses I put them aside to open later. In fact, I'm looking forward to unboxing the Kodak Instamatic I bought in 1975. I'm sure I'll get round to doing that maรฑana.

Of course I chimp, unless I'm shooting fast moving events or action. Call it confidence or arogance or whatever you wish, but I don't understand not using a tool that's so easily and quickly used. If you're a pro photographer, you certainly know what to expect when you press the shutter release - but in my job the motto is "Expect the unexpected".

Consider, for a moment, why it's referred to as "chimping" in the first place. It's checking or reviewing. That's a slang term that most obviously has a negative connotation, and you don't have to be Einsteining to notice it. I would guess that whoever coined it might have some self esteem issues.

The term "Chimping" might be offensive to Chimpanzees. We should avoid it at all costs. Actually, what is great about digital, is that you can get an idea of what was shot instantly, and develop and print all in the same day
