Nikon D850, Too Good to be True

I know the feeling! I ordered my 850 back in January from an authorized Nikon retailer. It was on backorder and it looked like it was going to be a long wait. Then I saw some of the ads you mentioned, from sellers I had never heard of, and decided to cancel my original order and go with one of these other stores (pretty sure it was Abe's). I went all the way through the online ordering process to buy an "in-stock" D850 - only to get a message that the camera would be shipped as soon as it was back in stock!
I think it was a valuable lesson for me - if a highly coveted piece of gear is not available at B&H or Adorama, then it is probably not available, period. I re-ordered from a trusted outlet, got to the back of the line, and eventually received my D850 in April. It was worth every second of the wait, and I am confident that the shop I bought it from is 100% legitimate.
Be patient, use a trusted vendor, and start saving up for all the upgraded glass you will soon be ordering! Good luck!

I absolutely agree with the theory that Nikon is slow shipping to keep the price high. Strictly an objective view because I don’t want one.

I have 2 D850's, bought one whilst in Middle East, Qatar, that was originally supplied to a dealer in India and the other here in the UK.
They are identical every way.
I suppose you could say the one I bought overseas is Grey import and the potential issue being "Warranty" I have all the
certificates and License if I get a problem will just ship to Nikon.

I went on B&H's preorder list in mid March and received my D850 April 12. While waiting for B&H to restock I kept looking into EBAY as a potential source and all the sellers already mentioned here as well as dozens more were selling grey market D850,s at roughly the same price as the reputable dealers and in some cases for thousands more. I suppose I was lucky to receive mine in just under a month from B&H but it was well worth the wait - wouldn't trade my D850 for anything else available out there. It appears B&H gets a small restock at roughly 30 to 45 day intervals so just be patient. BTW, I never received a restock notice from B&H, just a shipping notice and the camera was in my hands the following day.

As long as the law lets them get away with it, places like Abe’s and 42nd St will keep picking the pockets of the unsuspecting public.

I doubt it. If they had the product they would fill all the orders at the current prices. As for holding back U.S. shipments, my guess is that they have long standing contracts with distributors around the world that they must live up to, even if those customers are not clamoring to get their hands on the latest and greatest.

The reviews and awards attributed to the D850 are enough to keep the prices up.

I have been in the list at B&H and Adorama, just like a lot of other folks. Everyone once in awhile I will search the net, and guess what I found today. 3 places, had in stock, Nikon D850.

42ndstreet photo, which we all know is not the most honest place.

abesinmaine, which again is not the best in the world

And then I ran across this place, had never heard of it Dealsoftheyear. https://dealsallyear.com/nikon-d850-dslr-camera-body.html?gclid=Cj0KCQjwuYTYBRDsARIsAJnrUXCeJBZ0_1r9_6d70Tj1LlQ8q7vSZgdCjVd-OPiZFazqfGBdsx6LBa8aAv1JEALw_wcB

Now all 3 places have the D850 in stock, imagine my surprise, since the top places are all on back order.

Now of course, the old if its too good to be true, it most likely isn't. All 3 have the import model. You have to dig a bit to find that. 1 year warranty, 30 days parts, by seller.

Wish Nikon would kick it into overdrive.

"waiting on the D850 in Olympia" ...lol

Try onecall.com Twice now I've been able to buy a camera from them which was not available at B&H or Adorama. The cameras were a Nikon D800 and a Fuji X-T2. This was when the cameras first came out.

I got my D850 back in April from B&H, which I had placed an order in March, 2018. I received the camera early April just time to take to Tanzania. What a camera . . . Really impressed. It worked great in India where the tigers are far off, and you really can’t bring a large telephoto lens (although I wished I had brought my 500mm and a tripod). With 45 mp, you can crop.

Unfortunately, I didn’t notice that I had not received a cover for the flash before it was too late to complaint to B&H.

You just never know. I walked into our small local camera store and there was an 850 on the shelf. I bought it. Later I learned it was supposed to be a special order for someone else but did not get tagged. Owner got the guy another and sold it to him for cost. Local stores still offer something...called service.

Maybe you have to look where every one else is not looking. Amazon is out of stock with only 98 reviews. So that would mean they've sold maybe 1000 if one out of ten buyers make a review...

I ordered my D850 at Best Buy for store pickup early this year. Three days later they had my camera, which I picked up at the nearest Best Buy location. I registered the body on the Nikon website and received a confirmation of this. I have to assume it is a legitimate product for US use. In any case it works as advertised and as described by some pros.

I got on the list at B&H in March and had mine in less than 3 weeks. Don’t stress or worry about the gray stuff. Just get on the list.
