After reading 2 pages of your repeating the same thing over and over, just sell the damned camera. The grip is the grip and nothing you are saying (over and over again) is going to change the grip. We get it - you like the old technology from the D200. I guess a couple of hundred thousand other happy Nikon 500 with grip shooters must have it wrong.

I can understand your mentioning that you don't care for the new design and questioning whether any other grips differ, but once you learned that there are not, what's the point of prolonging the discussion?

Hey Rick. You must be from New York. Don't look now but your attitude is showing.

Wow, that is some real nice advice. As of your post I'm sorry I afended you. All I was trying to find out is what I might be doing wrong that I am draining the battery within 600 pictures. Yes I do think the camera is a great camera and I would not think to get rid of it. Thanks to uhh I have come up with the solution to the problem. 1. Bigger battery that they sell. 2. Stop viewing the photo on camera so much. With those 2 problems I should be fine.
As for you solution I think you should keep them to yourself yes I do think the old technology is better but I'm sure nikon has a reason why they changed it. I'm sure you don't have the answer to that question so you have a great weekend and please keep your sly remarks to yourself they are not needed here on uhh.

If you are only getting 600 shots, you also need to turn off the wifi and bluetooth. I get 1200-1500 shots on a normal battery, but may now buy an 18 to get 5000 shots when on vacation. I use the grip battery first. Rarely need to charge the in-camera battery. I bought the grip for balance and vertical shooting.
Ask yourself, how often do you shoot 1500 shots in a day? I shoot entire football games on 400-600 shots and I'm bursting a lot. My point is, you would rarely need that second battery anyway. And it is a piece of cake to pull the tray out and recharge overnight. To Rick from NY's point, I think you may be making a mountain out of a mole hill, as well. This just ain't a big thing.

I put the grip back in the box, sent it to the attic and just carry a couple of extra batteries in my pocket! DUH! (It came with the camera----)

Yes I did not know it when I got it it would have been like that I would have got a different camera. Cause I hate the battery setup . On the d500.

I think you will HATE any battery setup on any camera that you add the grip as an accessory. They are all going to be similar in their operation. Battery in grip and battery in camera. Some brand may offer dual charging but I'm not aware of it.

I believe once you have used up the battery in the camera, the spare one in the grip takes over.
It is actually a setting in the menu - you can choose which battery is used first/second

I have mine set so it uses the battery in the grip first and using the camera battery as the "reserve tank" - that way I hjust have to replace the grip battery - unless, off course, I run both down

Turning off the wifi/blue tooth made a big difference for me. I also set the battery grip battery to be used first. I shoot mainly wildlife and birds and will sometimes shoot up to 1500-2000 without an issue. Rarely do I get to the in camera battery but check it by quickly removing the grip when I am charging about every 3rd shoot. You might be fine with it once you get used to it. Good luck!

What is the model number of the nikon grip I am interested in getting one for my d500 only because mine only hold 1 battery. Thanks
Scott

The battery grip only holds one battery - an el15, or an el18 or you can use the included adapter to use 8 AA's. If you want to use 2 batteries you need to have an el15 in the camera

An easy solution to the OP's problem would be to ONLY put a battery in the grip. Issue resolved as you now get all the functions the grip provides without the 'hassle' or removing it to replace the 'internal' battery! Or, you could get a EN-EL18 series battery and shoot forever! Your choice! Yes I remember the grip for my D200 but I prefer being able to use the larger battery. Best of luck.

...look in your Setup menu, you'll find "Battery Info"... quicker is register *that* into your "My Menu" (to do that, you start in "My Menu")...easy way to check on your batteries. I find "My Menu" very handy for a quick check and usually have 5 or 6 dissimilar items in there for my Nikon bodies...

...Setup Menu is where you assign which battery is "primary"...make the grip battery "primary." That's all you have to do and you will only take the camera battery out to recharge once-in-awhile...rest of the time just switch out the grip battery. If you work without the grip the body-battery automatically becomes primary...
