Hello i just got the d500 not to long ago great camera for me love it. But im not to happy with the battery grip. I went from the d200 to the d500. Is there any reason that nikon designed the 500 battery grip the way they did I can not figure out why they did that. Does anyone know of a after market grip that is sold. I am not happy with the grip at all. Thanks scott

What don’t you like about the grip? I have fairly large hands and with most cameras prefer the grip to accommodate my hands, but find with my D500 with the grip it is almost to big for my hands. And to answer your question I don’t know of any aftermarket grips

If you Google d500 battery grip you will see a number of alternative brands. However, most/all are designed just like the Nikon.

If I recall correctly the D200 grip slipped into the battery compartment. I like the current setup as the in camera battery is used as a backup. With Eneloop AA batteries in the grip I can shoot all day most of the time. I think the D200 used up batteries a lot faster than the D500.

What is it that you don't like about the design?

Very sorry , the grip is great , the fact that 1 battery is in the camera and 1 battery is out of the camera is a real pain in the neck for me I don't know about anyone else but I'm not liking it.

Jules , you like the way nikon set up the d500 battery grip with one battery in the camera and one out? So every time that batery needs a charge you have to remove the grip remove the battery replace the battery and put it back together. Sounds like alot of work. Am I seeing this wrong or doing something wrong?

I believe once you have used up the battery in the camera, the spare one in the grip takes over.

Don’t you just hate it when you’re forced to buy something you know you won’t like?

You can choose which battery is used first, then the camera automatcally switches when necessary.
I use the EN-EL 18 battery in the grip which gives around 5000 shots per charge. Never have to use the EN-EL 15 in the camera that way.

Batteries last longest when you are not constantly chimping your shots because the LCD screen is by far the biggest power hog in any camera, thats the reason Sonys have such horrendously poor battery life. The 15 battery should yield 1500-1800 shots per charge. The 18 batteries are designed for the D4s and D5 cameras but fit the D500 grips giving over 3X the shots as the 15 batteries can.

That’s interesting as my Nikon grip has 2 Separate battery cradles, 1 holds 1 factory battery. Or I can use the other that holds 8 AA batteries which is supposed to be the equivalent of 2 factory battery lives. As there is no battery in the actual camera body itself. The cradles are simply inserted into the side of the battery grip

What kind of camera is it mine is a d500 1 battery in the camera 1 battery in the grip. I feel this is a poor design I am wondering what other people think. And also what they do. So far what I have got from people on uhh is I can get a bigger battery and need to stop viewing the pictures on the lcd screen so much.
