I have a D500. And yes I guess I could put a battery in the camera and 1 in the grip. But when I bought the grip it had 2 cradles as I mentioned before. I never knew and or thought of putting a battery in the camera I thought the double cradle would eliminate the need to ever remove the grip, now I learned something else about my camera I did not know

You can put 2 battery's in that mb d17? I have the same one only 1 battery in the grip and 1 battery in the camera.

I do not like that I have to take the grip off to change the battery all the time

It has the two different cradles one takes the standard camera battery and the other cradle takes eight AA batteries, Which is supposed to be the equivalent of two regular batteries but I see your point wanting to use 2 camera batteries as opposed to AA batteries

Hello i just got the d500 not to long ago great camera for me love it. But im not to happy with the battery grip. I went from the d200 to the d500. Is there any reason that nikon designed the 500 battery grip the way they did I can not figure out why they did that. Does anyone know of a after market grip that is sold. I am not happy with the grip at all. Thanks scott

That's too bad. I have found just the opposite to be true. I bought my D500 with the battery grip and it is never off the camera. Love the balance it gives me with the 200-500 lens attached. And, I often reassign the buttons on my camera and they transfer over to the grip. Sorry you are not pleased.
Note. Many hoggers have expressed frustration with after market battery grips in general, while others praise there's.

I also have an old D200 with two batteries in the grip....and like it much better than my newer D810 with one battery in camera and one in grip.
With the D200, I have NEVER removed the grip once it was installed on the camera. With the newer setup (MB-D12 on the D810), the grip has to be removed to access the second battery in the camera. I know that battery order is camera-selectable....but IMHO it is engineered poorly.

I believe once you have used up the battery in the camera, the spare one in the grip takes over.

No, it’s the oppposite. The one in the camera rarely discharges. I occasionally rotate it out and charge it, but 90% of the time I only need to charge the one in the grip.

It is a choice which one gets used first.

Mine is set the same as you described, but it is not the only way. 8 good rechargeable AA batteries go a long way.

Thank you. I did not know that.

After reading 2 pages of your repeating the same thing over and over, just sell the damned camera. The grip is the grip and nothing you are saying (over and over again) is going to change the grip. And no - the 3rd party grips for 500 are all designed as knockoffs of the OEM Nikon and use identical connections.

We get it - you like the old technology from the D200. I guess a couple of hundred thousand other happy Nikon 500 with grip shooters must have it wrong.

I can understand your mentioning that you don't care for the new design and questioning whether any other grips differ, but once you learned that there are not, what's the point of prolonging the discussion?
