I use older equipment, mostly digital though...Sony/Minolta camera and lens combos. AndyH started a good thread back around April 28 on putting together a great kit without utilizing the latest equipment .. title - "Assembling a DSLR outfit - the $2,000 challenge". That sounds like a lot of $$ but he was doing two kits (him and one for spouse). I've put togedther a rather large system for well under that figure with 4 DSLRs and a couple suitcases of used lens (and all the other goodies) that would let me do almost any shooting situation. Fun and quite capable equipment, fun process. I'm thinking of doing it again with either Nikon/Canon...just to play with all the great old glass, and modern glass that is getting harder to buy for Sony A-mount. Have fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This topic is very interesting. There is a similar (psychological) situation with teenagers and cell phones. The current Samsung Sx is just great!! Then the Samsung S(x+1) hits the market. Ohh, Uhh, YUCK Blaaah! My Samsung Sx is no good. Howl, sob, "I WANT A NEW ONE OR I DIE".
I find it kind of fun to take the use of old equipment for hi-quality photography to a sport. This time I stay in the digital corner. Film is for another discussion. I want to show you all some pics I have shot with THREE combinations:

1. My old Canon EOS-1D, Mk. IIN with Lens: Зени́т Ге́лиос 44 M-6, 58 mm, f/2 (made in Russia in the 70's) and an extension tube. (the weird plant)
2. The same EOS-1D with a rather new cheap budget zoom, a Tamron 18-200 Asph. Approx. USD100 (Couple at coffee table)
3. The same old EOS-1D with a NEW Sigma 85 mm f/1.4 Art (Concert)

-By the way, I have got the EOS-1D from a friend for my 70'th birthday. Thus, camera body cost was 0USD...

I was just wondering how many on this forum use old equipment for they hobby. I found if I buy older equipment I can save a ton of money and have just as much fun as if I purchased the latest gear. I love shooting birds and other animals but the latest gear would cost me 10,000 dollars. I use a used nikon D3 and a sigma 500mm f4.5 prime and together it cost less then the tax on a new setup. Just something to think about.

Although I give away my cameras when I upgrade, I understand that all of the nikons i have given away over the years are still going strong and providing plenty of enjoyment.

lenses, on the other hand, are forever and I do not donate high quality glass. My ancient lenses work just fine.

What a bunch of spendthrifts! 😎 for this old dog I bought Olympus em1,em5, e-600. Bought used. We bottom feeders must stay strong. I use 4/3’s lenses, cheap cheap cheap. 12-60, 50-200 panaleica 14-50. I’ve got less than a grand I bet, I’m an eBay slut. Also still love using my D2X. Bought it to use the 80-400.

That Teasel resents the term weird, the politically correct term is “distinctive!” 😎

I agree completely!

Most important thing, IMHO, is to have a plan, but take advantage of bargain opportunities as they arise. OleMikey has assembled a pretty great outfit by following this rule (and adding some ingenuity in adapting and modifying stuff), and I know plenty of others have as well. In any area of tech innovation, it really makes sense to avoid the very latest generation of gear, IMHO - it's often a few years before the glitches are worked out.

The back adaptability of the current top end makers is truly astounding - I can still use some of my old Nikon manual lenses on my current DSLR, even though most of the bells and whistles don't translate. My wife and I have some pretty good glass on our $2K budget, which is possible when you go the APS route, and that's going to be fine for us for a long while. I'd rather upgrade our D3200 bodies when it's time, and spend the difference on travel, matting, framing, and printing. I've suffered from GAS in past lives, but it's all money that could be better spent, IMHO.

The teenagers and their cell phones analogy is very apt, I think.

And then there's the fun of actually going out and shooting film, and then scanning it into digital images. I've got Rollei, Nikon, Zeiss, Graphic, and other gear that's older than I am (and I'm on Medicare...), that still gives a great deal of pleasure. As someone at the auto boneyard once said to me, "We're all driving around on used parts...."

Cheers,
Andy

I'm guessing the E620 will still make a handsome paperweight.

Mine is is decontented 600, it’s mahvahlus, let’s see, 12mpx, IS, live view, battery pack, balances really nice with the 50-200 f2.8, heck how much is a 200-400 f2.8 Nikkor?

Actually more than a few. That said, most of the newer additions are newer AF iterations as well. I have sold or given a few older ones away. I gave my oldest boy my old D70s along with two older AF lenses and I sold a few older 3rd party lenses. I really need to thin the herd more though...

Same here. My Sony F717 still works perfectly and at 5MP does a great job.

The old Canon lenses are great. I use the modern EF system. Since I have a Canon AE1 with a 50 mm FD lens, I bought an adapter FD/FL-->EOS. There are two types of adapters. One with NO lens element. That one only goes for close ups. To be able to focus to infinity, is has to be a distance correc ting lens element in there. Even if that lens element is good, we do not have any Canon lens anymore.

I have an ole AE-1 setup but the wife's new camera is a Rebel T6. I'd love to use those old lenses on the DSLR. So I thank you for this post! :)

My first camera was a Voigtlander 35mm slide camera I borrowed from my Dad. Wish I had that thing today. I don't remember the model but it had a long button on it to advance the film. In 6th grade I was developing my own film from it and had a ton of fun learning about light, exposure, composition and the like. I did more experimenting later with my AE-1 setup I bought used before the digital revolution. I found the little Canon compact cameras were more likely to be taken with me than a whole bag of AE-1 tricks.
