I have the Epson Stylus Photo 1400 and it does a great job. I got it at Staples last year for around $200. If they still carry it, that price may even be lower now. Staples also carries the ink cartridges (#79) and a limited choice of Epson paper at pretty reasonable prices.

Add me to the Epson bandwagon also. Not only am I thrilled with the results from my Stylus PHOTO 1400, I am very satisfied with the support I get from the company.

Sorry, You're right, it's 8.5 X 11. I still slip and go into the old way of printing that I did for many years. You can put paper up to 11" wide on the 1400. If you want to go larger, you will need to buy a different model. If you decide to go BIG, you can buy the paper in 100' rolls. Naturally, the printer would be bigger and more expensive than mine, and I think that the larger printers may have 8 cartridges. If you do go substantially larger, you might also need a better camera. I print 8.5 X 11 and I use a Nikon 3100, which has 10MP. This is more than adequate for the size I print.

OK, so now the 1400 only prints 11" wide, right? I can still print 11 inches by 25 feet if I wanted to, right?
The paper 17 x 22 I bought, directly from Epson, has a really poor finish, and even other Epson papers available in Staples, aren't really that great, that's why I like Kodak or lab processing.
BTW, ever try Staples online? Lots cheaper. More variety.

I made a mistake of buying an Epson r1800 to print photos years ago. The ink was running out so fast that I was making a trip to the supplier every few days. I stopped using it all together and these days if I am going to printing an 8x10 I just use the HP officejet 8500 that I use for everything else. But most of the time I will just send it off to a lab.I have a few friends with high end photo only printers that love them, but you may want to consider carefully, if you are not using it to make a living. Keep in mind that the person who tells you something is the greatest and latest, may be correct in terms of his use, and the same equipment could be totally wrong for you

Depends on size , canon has a new pixma coming out for up to 13X19 if I remember the size correctly, about $1,000. They also have a couple of multipurpose print FAX or copiers that produce very good 8.5X11's, one even comes with a film scanner. Bob.

My 1400 goes up to 11 X 17. I don't buy anything other than 5 star Epson paper. It looks beautiful, but you need to give it 24 hours to dry. If I'm printing more than one, which is always always, I put a piece of plain paper between prints. Also, I forgot to mention that if one cartridge is empty, you only have to replace that one. If it is completely out of ink, it will stop printing. Also load the paper 1 sheet at a time. Good Luck.

I also have a Epson 1400 and I'm delighted with the photo printed from my iMac. Also, this printer has the attachments to print photos on CD's.

I haven't sold any pictures, yet...but I hope to, and I completely understand, and agree that I'm not ready for a large expenditure like that yet.
I matted a bunch of my best pictures for an art show we have here at the beach at the end of the summer but the show was cancelled due to a hurricane...more of a nonicane.
So I won't know if I'm a professional until the next art show.

I use a Canon i9900 printer that I have had for at least 5 years. I payed around 400 to 500 dollars for it and have been delighted with it. Epson, Canon and Hp have photo quality printers currently
in this price range or several hundred more that will give you excellent results. You can't go wrong with any of them. What ever you choose, stay with the manufactures own inks and papers. The only problems I have had was when I did not follow this rule and purchased cheaper inks.

SAM'S Club or Costco is much, much cheaper. The INK for a photo printer will cause you to re-fi your house.

Santa really likes Epson Stylus photo Printers. Basically, you buy them by the maximum width needed. I have had an Epson Photo 1400 for well over a year. The prints are amazing. They print pretty much exactly what I see on my iMac screen. Mine is pretty BIG, but I love it. It does take 6 ink cartridges, but I have found that you can get a good number of prints per cartridge. Since what I see on the screen is what prints, there is no trial and error. I got mine for $300. Santa also loves Epson photo paper. I use Ultra Premium Presentation Matte 8 X 10 paper. It is heavy duty and goes for around $20 for 50 sheets. The cartridges are $18. One of the best things about the supplies is that my local camera store has all of these supplies and it's just around the corner.

Sounds like you have about 120.00 in ink and paper, about how many 8x10 prints can you make before some ink or paper runs out? I mean what I'm really getting at isn't it cheaper to go to a lab or good print store to have photos printed because it seems cheaper in the end then what pay for ink/paper than what they pay and charge per print.

I have had a Canon PIXMA iX6520, wide carriage printer for a little while now. Uses 5 ink tanks, cost about $56 to completely re-ink. They are available for less than $200, at B&H Photo. But you really need a big! desk.

Printing your own photos is not cheap, but its fun. If I were going to print a load of little 4x6 album prints, I would probably go to Walley World. But then I own one of those little selphy dye transfer printers, that does 4x6's. Cost about 22 cents per print you can't hardly drive to WW, and print images that cheap; considering the price of fuel.

Thanks for the info... I am thinking of selling photos because i keep getting prodded to open up my own studio by my friends but i do not know where to begin. And I was just wondering if I could save/make more money buying a higher end printer with many ink containers/buy bulk photo paper or just find a good reasonable lab that buys more of this stuff in bulk and maybe it's cheaper that way. I don't know. Anyone out there thought/figured this out yet?
