This may be an old topic, but I just assigned my d7200 AE-L, AF-L button to autofocus. Just wondering who uses back button focus and who doesn't, and is it a good option. Everything on the Web seems to say it is wonderful. If so, why did Nikon not just build it in?

Most of what I shoot is not moving, flowers, mountains, buildings, etc. I tried BBF once, found it confusing so went back to "standard" shutter release functions. Also a lot of my lenses are vintage MF "film" lenses, so BBF just complicates things for me.

Wow - what a neat idea. I think I will try it out - only if I can figure out how to do it. ~FiddleMaker

It's in your Manuel.

I use back focus most of the time. What I like is that once I focus I can shoot multiple shots without the camera refocusing each time. This works well on a subject that is not moving.

With all those beers it's a wonder you can focus at all!

The article links are better than my manuals so check them out. I've been using bbf for some time but the links pointed out a setting I'd not been using. Thanks for posting the articles, guys.

As far as I am concerned Nikon can discontinue the 1/2 push-button focus. BBF is great for me.

I don’t know when they put back button focus but I love it. For still photography I can focus on the subject release the back button focus, and then can we compose my photo and shoot with the shutter release without losing focus on the original point of interest. The same goes for birding and/or moving objects I can focus until such time it locks in let it go and use the continuous focus on the shutter realse.

Has anyone used it on the Sony A7lll? I read an article on it that said not to use it on a Sony A7lll. Can’t remember the reason for it, will have to look for it.

BBF is great!

Easy to setup on Canon cameras; it's a menu option.
I learned about BBF from Tony Northrop, a strong advocate.

Easy to set up. Just Google "how to set up back button focus for... (your kind of camera.)

Thanks for all of the great posts. I'll be interested in seeing how I like BBF now that I have just set it up.

I quote, "I have set the fn button for AF-L."

According to this he reassigned focus lock to another button. I'm curious why someone would do that. While it doesn't seem to make sense, I am often surprised.

I miss typed. I have the fn button set to AE-L.

I use BBF and will never go back. Having focus unlinked from the shutter release is wonderful and allows one to choose between focus and lock and continuous focusing. One never needs to worry about the camera inadvertently refocusing when shooting multiple frames. This is probably the most important thing I have done in the past two years to improve my skills.

Agreed! I hated when my 7100 would refocus on a closer object when my more-distant subject moved or I was trying to track a subject or just get a different angle on a static subject. 1/2 press on the shutter works if nothing else is moving, but BBF is far superior when it comes to maintaining focus and concentrating on the subject without having to worry about the AF kicking in.
