I found that since I am left-eyed, my right eye was always in the way of my thumb when using the AF-on (aka BBF) on my D500. I also discovered that there was a very slight camera movement to the left caused by pressing the button on the upper right of the camera body---seriously, I'm not making this up---the body was slightly rotating on a vertical axis. So I reprogrammed the Fn button for the AF-on function. So I am also doing BBF, but not with the AF-on button. And the sharpness is very noticeable when using this alternate button approach. The Fn button is on the front of the camera and when I press it, the camera is pushing back into my face (and not away from it) and is a lot more stable. The only problem is remembering to press it when tracking soccer games. Sometimes I get caught up in the action and take a picture, forgetting to press the Fn button.

More you use it, the more it becomes automatic.

Yep.....over the years, I have found that practice does NOT make you perfect. It only makes you consistent. Ha.

It can make you very annoyed at making the same error over and over again.

It used to make me annoyed but at my age now, I’m just happy to remember which end to look through

I had my new DSLR for only about a month when I had to photograph a relative's wedding. No pressure right? Was there the night before practicing and I became frustrated when my camera would not focus on the person coming down the aisle. I knew there had to be a fix so I went online that night searching for problems on focusing. That's when I learned about back button focusing. Not only did it helped me make good wedding pictures but I have never turned it off back button focusing since then. Absolutely love it
