"Arbus" After Diane Arbus, a bit of a strange choice considering the subjects of much of her photo work and suicide. Look up her Ex, Allan Franklin Arbus. There are some surprises there too (less creepy though).

You want a dog to definitely understand the word STOP.

As cool as F-Stop sounds photographically, you don't want to confuse the poor thing.

And 2 syllable names do work best with dogs.

When you get her, try a few names on for size and see if there is one that perks her ears up. She'll be a long term partner, so let her share in the decision.

Ditch the Dog! a mid to large size dog will simply degrade your photography experience.

More than you may know, a lot of people, both men and women are put off by dogs.... and your "puppy" is, for a couple of years going to be a high energy distraction and "frighten" people you are hoping to photograph. It will not be a welcome addition to your approach to people.

Don't believe me.... wait until you see some reactions. Just not going to help you in your desire to warm people up to the photographic experience. I am dead set on this. I would never have a dog, particularly a young dog, at my side when carrying a camera.

Harsh? I don't think you have any idea what you are in for.

That is a good point on using F-Stop for a name. :-)

I would call it GOLDEN. It reminds me of the GOLDEN hours to photograph.

"Goldie" would be even better.

I had a cat named Dammit. Wasn't his name when we got him. It was Buffy. But he weren't no vampire slayer (too lazy for that). And we were always yelling, "Dammit Buffy!" He was always causing trouble. For example, a couple years later when he sneaked out one day. it was really early in the morning so we tried to be quiet, going around the neighborhood loudly whispering "Dammit". Found him eventually, after about a half hour searching. A couple days later one of our neighbors, a nice lady from Haiti, asked me why my wife jogged, if she hated it so much? She was serious and I was baffled... until she explained that she'd overheard my ex that morning, out in her sweat pants and t-shirt, trotting around the neighborhood saying, "Dammit.... Dammit.... Dammit...."

At a horse show, one of the horses was named "Topless". Always got the audiences' attention and a laugh when they announced on the PA, "Now entering the arena is Jane Doe, riding Topless."

In fact, horse names are sometimes the strangest.... At shows last year I photographed:

Pepped Up Gin & Tonic
A Smoking Gun
Hello Newman
Knight Watch
Into the Storm
Weather By Knight
Mnd New York Minute
Wred Baron
Parsan's Goldn Dancer
The Devil Wears Prada
Leather and Lace
Prince Pretty Boy's Star
Knock Your Socks Off

Just to name a few! No typos! I'm sure they all have much simpler "barn names".

Depends on how well the dog is trained.

I love dogs but I would not bring them on a photo trip. What is he going to do, leash it to his tripod? Let it run loose off-leash while he does photography, and play with a Rattlesnake or piss off a Bear? I guess it could guard his camera bags. My dogs, being hounds would run off in to the brush to chase a jack rabbit not to be seen again. From what I know even Beagles will track for miles spontaneously, mine are much larger breeds of scent hounds. Yes, Irish Setters, Labs, Shepards are likely better behaved but they still have their limits of testing. On road trips or vacations when I have taken previous a dog, he was either chained in or to the car. And chained in doors at the motel. Yes, many people are scared of dogs!

JayPeg is likable and will command the dog's attention. I could also like Pixel and either are good for a female puppy.

Make it something that others will understand.

How about "Kodak"?

This is not a question about cameras or lenses per se. But I am asking for your- witty fellow UHHers' - suggestions. I am getting a female Golden Retriever puppy who will be my photo trip companion on my future treks out with my camera. We will be out there, in the great outdoors, shooting landscapes and Western Wandering Vistas together. I am trying to think of a photography-related appropriate name for her. I want it to be a short, simple, easy to say name, but not a generic "nikon" or "cannon" or such; nor any name that could be mispronounced- such as "focus." I'm sure there is something fun and witty, but can't think of any.
My daughter used to have an adopted three-legged dog I nick named "tripod." That was fun.
Any suggestions will be welcomed. Thanks in advance.
