I strongly recommend you visit the 'Oak Alley Plantation'. It is a 45 minute ride via 'Grayline Bus Tour'. If you take the tour, you only get about two hours at the destination. While the tour of the plantation house is interesting and worth the money, it takes away from your time to walk to the 'classic' shot of 14 old oak trees on each side of the gravel pathway. The trees are estimated to be between 250 and 300 years old, if I remember the tour guide correctly. I was there in 2000 and walked with my 4X5 about 1/4 mile from the home to the end of the path. (With that camera, lenses, and tripod, it may have only been 800 feet but it seemed like 1/4 mile.) Anyway, it is one of my favorite shots and have it framed in my family room. Enjoy yourself and be safe.

I will be in Louisiana later this month and am interested in doing a swamp tour. Where did you go and who did you use?

I used 'Grayline Bus Tours' in New Orleans to do a swamp tour. It too, was worth the time and money. You have to to shoot from the deck of the boat, so a camera with autofocus and autoexposure is very helpful, especially for moving objects such as alligators, and you will see a couple of them during your time in the swamp/river. You may be moving west and the alligator is moving west at an angle at a different speed, or another alligator is going entirely elsewhere, that is why these two features on your camera are very valuable.
It is going to be sticky (as in humid) and there is going to be considerable sun (on a given day) and in a swamp, you may also have mosquitoes, so you may want to use sun protection and bug spray.

I was just there for work this week (returned home today)...The street car looked like it would be fun. You can catch that and head out away from the downtown. We spent most of our nights at the restaurants off of South Carrollton Ave. So many cool houses along that ride. Get off at Maple and S Carrollton and walk two blocks to http://www.brigtsens.com Get the pecan pie.

Reading these NOLA posts makes me want to grab the next plane and BE THERE! I was there a year ago and all those posts are true. The WWll Museum was incredible and right behind my hotel. Easily the most pleasant Sunday I've ever spent was the French Quarter one afternoon. Beautiful day, food, music, great people having fun and relaxing. The French Quarter at night has music in the streets, bars, restaurants. It's wonderful. Bourbon St., on the other hand, has the music of course but also the tacky feel of a big Frat party. I didn't care for it, but it's worth a walk through at least.

Go to Pat O'Briens and have a few Hurricanes. You won't be able to focus for a while which is why auto-focus cameras were invented. I've only been to New Orleans twice and both trips were to the Sugar Bowl on New Years. I'm not sure if I took any photos but I had a hell of a good time.

Enjoy New Orleans. But, be careful there. As in all popular tourist cities, there are places that are not safe. Don't drift off alone. Take some good photos. The seafood and music are great.

Began with cafe binget and beer. Felix's for oysters. Shot a mini parade (they seem to pop up like thunder storms). Poolside wine. 12 hr train ride was bumpy. Fell out of bunk. IL Central ran out of food. Housekeeping was 2 hr late so more wine. Shot gorry looking windows from balcony. Got job to shoot condo pics for sale frustrated owner. Not a bad start. Pics in process.
