In the Hilton Head Harbor a boat tour will almost always get close to dolphins and often the captain can get dolphins swimming alongside the boat where you can get great closeups near the bow.

I’m taking an unexpected jaunt to Hilton Head in late may, and I know nothing of the area, relating to photography. Does anyone have any tips as to what not to miss with my camera? I will have some free time to explore.
Land sakes honey child!! There is plenty to see. As a former resident of Savannah. Hop on up to Charlston SC about an hour north and check out Ft Sumpter, where the Civil War was started. Walk along the Battery it is right next to the charming old houses called the Painted Ladies. Then go the other direction to Savannah Ga. Also within an hours drive. It is a beautiful old city with lots of historical places and buildings. Everything from early explores to the Revolutionary War, Civil War, (know as the "recent unpleasantness") to the Girl Scouts founder and finishing up with Forest Gump. Check out Ft Jackson or Ft Pulaski, designed by Rober E Lee. Fiddle Dee Dee. There is so much to see. The sand gnats and mosquitos will be there right with you as well as the heat and humidity. Don't forget to get a bag of boiled peanuts to munch on while you are strolling around under the Spanish Moss. Happy Shooting
Savannah is 30 minutes away. check out the St. Bonaventure cemetary with civil way sections, city developers, wwi and wwii sections. Just fantastic and the grounds are fantastic.
Go up to Sheldon past Beaufort to the Sheldon Church. Beaufort is fantastic as you learn about the "Bugout" of the city when the Union ships and 30,000 soldiers sat in the harbor..... 400 soldiers guarding the city and the residents said, "We are outta here, you can have the place, that is why the city was not burned down.
I second the recommendation for Beaufort, would add old Bluffton and, if you want wildlife, a photo boat to take you to places inaccessible from land.
Check out our local camera club web page,
http://new-cchhi.net/ The Field Trip Galleries will show you nearby areas for photo ops with samples of what you might capture.

We have been going to HHI for almost 30 years with a time share. I would say, all of the above, with emphasis on the bike touring. It gets you places and proximity you otherwise miss. Also, H2O does an electric boat tour on Sea Pines Plantation that gives plenty of close up alligator and bird shots.
If your a History nut? You should not missed it, or maybe not, The low country has some of the most unique Americans the Gullah-Geechee people have lived for four centuries, from their beginnings as a colony of slaves to freed men and women.
Have you been to Savannah? We took a boat day trip to this city, one of the most beautiful in the south and that is saying a lot. The profusion of squares and old buildings provide a number of great photo opportunities. The boat ride and waterfront are nice, too.

There is a huge rookery at Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge. Lots of great photo ops there for birds. Go there and walk the trail to the rookery. It will not disappoint. Also good alligator photo ops. This in addition to harbor town. Been going there for 32 years
If you are into wildlife (especially birds) do not bypass Pinckney Island.
