I’m taking an unexpected jaunt to Hilton Head in late may, and I know nothing of the area, relating to photography. Does anyone have any tips as to what not to miss with my camera? I will have some free time to explore.
Touring? Check out Beaufort, SC not that far away....beautiful low country
jaymatt what do you like to photograph?
On the island, visit their iconic lighthouse and the Harbour Town area. In the same general area are some old ruins of the Stoney-Baynard Plantation. You cross a bridge to get onto the island. The bridge crosses over the Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge. That same road taking you on / off the island takes you past the Coastal Discovery Museum. And of course, there's plenty of beaches and the Atlantic Ocean.

Just about anything--landscape, seascape, items of interest, architecture, street photography, historical items, wildlife (but not much of a bird guy).

Sorry about the small size. I took this several years ago with a little Fuji point and shoot camera.

Near the lighthouse is a slave cemetery. Note how close together the old headstones are. They certainly did not bury people that way. At some point it appears the stones were moved closer to make room for development. Never observed this at any other cemetery.
The Milky Way is up over the ocean right now. The moon should be getting dark. That lighthouse would make a great foreground for astro.....
Went to a photo retrest in Charleston a couple of weeks ago and there were some amazing shots taken from Folly Beach Park. Dark enough if you shoot toward the ocean
There's a small park on the upper end of the island, Jarvis Park, that has a paved walkway around it. Best time to go for birds and gators is early morning or late afternoon. I've been there when there was wildlife everywhere and at times hardly any. The walking path is close to the water and gators like to sun in the grass between you and the water in hopes that one of the wading birds will get careless. Lots of walkers throughout the day but mostly during lunch breaks. Wildlife is used to people walking so it mostly ignores them. Hope you have a great visit to the island.

Go through Bluffton, SC. Then go out on some of the islands. You might see original slave cabins alongside golf courses. Interesting contrasts.

Just about everything on HHI is worthy of being photographed....
Harbour Town...
Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge....
Rent a bike and ride around the Island , you can find lots of interesting things by bike and you can ride the beach...
Look up the Pau- Hana Catamaran and go on a Dolphin Cruise ...Ive been to HHI three times and have taken it twice..
You wont run short of things to photograph..
Also nearby is historic Savannah Ga.
Looking forward to seeing pictures from your trip...
Tom
Beautiful area. Some old homes there worth shots. If you get near the water, watch out for the gators.
