Smartphone is always with me but limited controls. I love my Sony RX100m3, which fits in my pocket; but would opt for the newer RX100m5, if affordable. GoPro distant third unless you like its wide-angle effects.

Here are my favorites and why I like them.
Sony RX100M2, has a 28-100 f1.8 Zeiss T* lens. Zeiss T* lenses are about as good as they get. This camera also has a hot shoe for an extra flash if you want.
Sony HX90V, has a 24-720 mm Zeiss T* lens. One of the reasons this is my favorite point and shoot is the pop up range finder, plus the rear screen flips all the way up for selfies. The optics are exceptional.
These are both pocket camera's. Sony also makes larger camera's that are all in ones, like the Sony HX400V with a 24-1200 T* lens. And this is a native zoom, not digital.
Again, if you want simple, but still DSLR type quality, the Sony 90 V is for you. Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.

I love the Sony RX100M2.
Awesome little camera!!!
We have one at work for people to use as a loaner.
They come back from meetings with photos much better than a cell phone.
(I borrow it occasionally to "familiarize" myself so I can show them how to use it)

You can't go wrong with any of the Sony RX100 series. The current is the RX100v, and not exactly cheap. $948 new. But, all are sharp, and have good reviews. And fit in your pocket.

I have a Canon SX50 HS and love it. However, I wanted something I could pocket, so now I have a Panasonic DMC-ZS100. It can take RAW shots and has a 1" sensor, about 4 times the area of a 2.33" in the Canon and many P&S and mega-zoom cameras. If you leave any camera in "P" mode, it is as easy as pie.

After two trips to Europe lugging a Nikon D810 and a bunch of lenses, I bought the G7X Mark II and took it on the next trip. No regrets. For me, taking a big DSLR and lenses changes the focus of the trip from enjoying the time with my wife to the photo equipment. I'll use the big camera at home.

Taking my Fuji X-E2 to Europe next month for the same reason.
It's a one small bag family vacation, not a photo expedition.

I have been using various models in the Sony RX 100 series, most recently the 5 has a small alternative that fits in a pocket. It has a one inch sensor (I wouldn't want any sensor that is smaller), shoots raw, has an excellent lens, has viewfinders in the most recent models, and many other features which allow me to get good photos in it from a variety of lighting an spatial conditions. It is limited by a short zoom and not great (but not impossible in low light), but is a good all around camera that fits in a purse or a pocket. It's photos are much better than those from phones that I have seen, but if all you want are pics to post on facebook, a phone is probably fine.

I think i still have a zs7 somewhere. It was (maybe still is) a great camera for one that only does jpgs. I tried some subsequent models, but they were all a lot softer. Switched to a dslr. But I did like those early zs Panasonic series cameras, probably what got me back into photography in a more serious way.

I don't know a lot about Fuji mirrorless cameras. But a friend went to England a while back for 5 days, and took his Sony a6000 crop sensor mirrorless camera, with only two lenses. The 16-50mm and the 55-210mm. He said taking that small camera worked out just fine. No bulk, or extra weight.
