The first one. I would be really sad if someone cropped my horse's head out of the picture. I'd rather have my own head cropped out! LOL.
Having shot Equestrian for a long time, #1 will probably sell. Iam sure you were shooting continuous and a shot of the complete jump will sell better. These riders look at the horses as companions and are very close to them meaning they would prefer the entire horse in the entire jump. They sometime eat and sleep in the stall if their friend has a problem so they are very close so I always give them at least one shot of the complete gate and equine. Nice shot you got.
on both pictures , try cropping the lower part , removing the lower bar up to the bottom of the flower pot ????
I think the viewer relationship to the rider could bias toward #2, but I, not knowing either horse or rider would take #1.

As I was doing some post production work on this photo, I accidentally cropped it and saved it in the second photo's size. After looking at the photo both ways I was unable to decide which crop I liked the best. The first (original) shows off the rider and the horse's faces while the "accident" focuses in on the rider only. Most of the time whichever the viewer sees FIRST, they will go with that one. Having said that, will it influence you or not?! Which way do you prefer? Each of these are best viewed in download mode.

My choice is the first one hands down for general display. The second one is an image for a more exclusive purpose. The composition shows the determination and the poise of the rider in great detail.

Would you consider a different crop? If the image were mine, I'd crop out the fence on the right altogether and the bottom until the first bar. I don't think that the stuff on the right side adds to the story, and the crop on the bottom would really focus on the horse and the rider.

#1 is the shot. In addition to giving more information about what is going on, think of the direction of action. If you were photographing a rocket taking off for instance, you would want a vertical shot because the action is in the up/down axis. With the horse shot, although the action is up over the barrier, the overall action would be horizontal right to left and therefore would lend itself better to a horizontal shot.
Definitely the first one. To me the horse and rider jumping is the picture and seen all at once. The second cropping out the horse head leaves me feeling like I've missed something. Good image.
First. It is about the horse!
I would go with the first one. The second one doesn't make much sense with the horse's face cut out of the frame.

I like them both! I guess it depends on the story you are trying to tell. The first one shows the team effort, the second the rider's effort. I love horses, so I would go with the first.
... adding my vote for #1
Of the 2 I like the first better.
However it would seem better with the bottom cropped off to just below the first bar. Just sayin'...
