Nikon P900?? would you buy it again ??
[quote=Spirit Hawk]Had the idea i wanted a Sony HX400V,,but handled one at Best Buy ??now after handeling the Nikon P900 at BB i have 2nd thoughts???
Whats your thoughts on these 2 ????
I've had a P900 for about a year now, and really like it. However, I'm still asking myself if I would buy it again! I don't like the lack of Raw, no hot shoe, poor manual focus, poor location of the controls on the back of the camera, and the "burst" feature that leaves a lot to be desired. I keep thinking about a Canon SX60 for more features I want and only slight loss of focal length.

I like this camera...a lot. There are a few caveats, though. Does not shoot RAW, confusing manual focus, & I haven’t found the ISO control...if it exists.
Of course I haven’t really read the manual completely.
Lastly, you get the 2000mm only with Digital Zoom & apparently in Automatic Mode.
I probably have more reading to do.
Read the manual and/or get the guide book by Alexander White. ISO is in the Shooting menu, but it really works great if you program it to the "function" button on top by the power button. & 2000mm works w/o digital zoom; get away from automatic mode.

To answer the OP question on behalf of my wife - who has one - YES.
Also, Mr. Bill 2011 is correct. The 2000 mm equivalent does NOT depend on digital zoom and digital zoom is available on top of the 2000. Both the optical and the digital zoom function in all modes and my wife almost always shoots in P mode because that gives the ability to use a spot focus rather than letting the camera choose the focus point.
RTM.
Nikon is looking forward to a P1000. Possible next summer, 2019.
I don't have experience with the Sony, but here are a few pros/cons of the P900:
Pros: I like the long zoom of the P900 and the image stabilization works pretty well even at full zoom; and I'm old and a bit shaky. The quick "unzoom-rezoom" button is nice if you're having trouble finding your subject when zoomed in.
Cons: In general, autofocus seems a bit slow. And very slow (sometimes nonexistent) when taking videos and zooming in (and I do have continuous autofocus turned on in the menu). If I zoom in on a subject while taking a video, it takes several seconds to refocus, and sometimes just refuses to.

I would definitely buy the P900 again. It has incredible zoom so we can get wildlife pictures from a safe distance, it takes great pictures, is easy to use and it’s super convenient not having to change lenses. Plus, it brings a smile to my wife’s face as she is getting shots on her P900 while I’m still changing lenses on my Nikon D500.
Seriously, without a doubt, I would buy the P900 again. It’s a great camera.
This is from the left field at AT&T Park in San Francisco, I was approximately 100yds away, no tripod, just sitting on my knee. I would buy this camera again in a heartbeat, but since I already have it, I’m quite happy with it.
Neither camera supports RAW images. That is such a handicap in post processing.
U-date to my ?? found a good deal at B&H on a used Sony HX400V,,i will let you know how it works out??
Cheers Ron
The big advantage of the P900 is the lens. Otherwise it is just another oversized point and shoot.
I have a P900 and like it a lot. I have gotten shots I would have not gotten without it. I certainly am not qualified to say it is better than the Sony, but the P900 has given me some very good pictures.

They do that.
Not worried about not having RAW, great point and shoot with excellent results...

Considering the price of the Sony...the P900 is a good camera.
