Welcome to the forum and please don't let some people's responses discourage you... this forum is a great resource and there are some very knowledgable people here who are happy to share that knowledge. My $.02

Take pictures with whatever gear you have, experimenting often (i.e. See what happens when you change a shot from "Auto" to "Aperture Priority" at f/2.8 or what the perspective change is if you move 3 feet to the right), and critique your own work
Take notes as to what you find
Repeat daily
Read "Understanding Exposure"
Read Ansel Adams' series The Camera, The Negative, and The Print
Look at and critique others' pictures so you can get a feel for what you like
Oh yeah... and take more pictures 😄

Looking forward to seeing some of your work!

What an insulting question! You want us to teach you everything about the subject “photography”? You don’t have a large enough memory card or hard drive to record all our answers. Step one - find the shutter release on your camera and press down on it. When you have a more specific question, come back and ask it. Until then, stick with something less challenging like shoveling snow.

Did this mean , insulting post make you feel better? Would a kind answer or no answer have been so difficult?

Be your own critic (There is no one worse than oneself).

When unsatisfied, check why, correct.

That's it.

The jury is out on the second point... unless UHH is the exception.

As a person that is new to this forum, I find your response "very insulting". To use your words. You were not asked to take the camera out of the box, you were asked for tips and advice. I guess when were new to photography you never asked for help. Well good for you! Why don't you go shovel some snow and cool off.

Thanks very much for what you have asked...This is my first post in this forum and although I have been pursuing this hobby for over 15 years,I still consider myself as a beginner only...and I warmly recommend the following Free material/course as I found them very accessible as well as helpful.

1.David Peterson's Tips and Tricks are super super helpful...they are so simple and so effective...http://www.digital-photo-secrets.com/ .Please explore this site.

2. https://www.udemy.com/ditch-auto-start-shooting-in-manual/ This is a free video course that covers all the basics and beautifully presented.

As beginners,we do not truly need anything more than these resources....Manuals are handy for reference purpose but not suitable for general ideas and approach...We may dip into them as we try out what is covered in the above links...The Rest we learn by trying out the ideas learnt and taking more and more snaps...The Right course material is that which gets us interested and encourages us to try all that we learn...and the above 2 resources are pretty good in doing this.

Wishing you the very Best...Cheers.

I find that I can learn a lot from the nice people on here. Unfortunately, you have to put up with garbage once in a while. (I did the first time I asked a question but I keep coming back for more.) Please don't accept "OLD" as an excuse for rudeness. Not all of us old people are.

Geez, Ray, is it really necessary for you to be such a jackass? Can't you just give the OP a short, generous answer to his question? It is replies like yours that have me reading this board less and less, let alone participating by posting images. Just because you could go out and buy a camera and a lens does not make you the be all and end all of the craft, and certainly gives you no right to act like an arrogant, self important prick. If I was the OP, I would have turned and run after reading your reply to his post. Thankfully there are others here who are more generous and self evolved.

You've been getting some useful and not so useful tips, I'll toss a tip at you, been very helpful to me. Go to bed with the manual tucked under the pillow. Some info may get transferred to your brain. It may not work for you but it certainly will do no harm.
