I had a similar situation - I had taken a group shot at a family reunion and later realized I couldn't make it fit an 8x10. So I made it 10" wide and with the white border underneath I added a title (2014 Lockwood Family Reunion) - the result looked natural and came out perfectly.
I know this doesn't take care of the dark edges but maybe someone can help with that.

Thanks for the reply and the information you shared with me!
Yes, I have found myself in the same situation as you described to me!
And I've said a few "whew's" too!
Thanks again.

Doowopa,
Yes, now that I have learned information from a great forum group!
I have to say to myself, "why didn't I think of that"!!!
Thanks!

The ratio of the original is 8 x 12. To make it an 8 x 10, you would have to cut out the left and right people.
Here it is as an 8 x 12 @ 330 dpi, after some color correction and cleaning.

Thanks for your helping me and making a 8 x 12 photo for me.
I have the photo on a thumb drive and heading off to Sam's when they open today!
You and others in UHH have made my wife's day, as the photo is her family and the only ones still alive are the little girl with the glasses and my wife on the left side in the plaid dress, I am beside her on the arm of the couch. The photo was taken shortly after our marriage, almost 60 years ago. See why she cried when I showed her your re-worked photo?
Thanks again for all your help and information!!

BTW- -They DO make 8x12 mats, I use them a lot!
Longshadow, yes they do!
From Sam's I head to Michael's for the mat to fit the photo in a 11 x 14 frame.
Thanks again!

Guys,
The attached photo (maybe) is an original 3.5 x 5 photo.
It was sent to my wife as she and I are in the photo from years back.
However, she wanted an enlargement to 8x10 at least.
I tried to lighten the photo on the sides but could not get the darkness out of the photo.
Trying to crop the photo now, as the PP made the photo a 14mg size.
I tried the standard crops from PS without luck. Even tried to set my own sizes but to no avail for an 8x10 crop.
I tried to resize the photo in InfranView and again no luck.
Could you either tell me what I am doing wrong or crop it for me to an 8x10
My crops either cut the gentlemen on the ends or cropped them in half.
I tried to send the photo in an earlier post, but could not get it to take and the Ops deleted my post because there was no photo.
I tried twice to send/attach the photo.
Thanks in advance.

if you need 8x10 and don't want to crop heads, or sides, print to the largest size you can without chopping anything off, and you will just have a wider margin on the other two sides.

Good advise Gene51, thanks for the information too!
This is what I am having to do, print out to a larger size and trim back to 8 x 12 photo.
Matted in an 11x14 frame.
Thanks again for the reply to my issue!

thank you Dave, and you are welcome. this method will work a lot of miracles so long as the original is sharp and high quality... sometimes those are big if's but they are also beyond your control!

nikonkelly, NO, thank you for the information!
Yes! And the biggest IF "oh Gods, I should not have saved it as it overwrote the original" !!!
Thanks again
Dave
were you able to salvage the image?
I would convert this to a B&W, do a bit of dodging and burning to balance tone, and have it printed using the entire image, (about a 7.5 X 10) and have a custom mat cut for a larger standard frame, like a 12 X 16.

This is about as close as you can get to 8x10, and I cropped a little off the left side to gain a bit more vertical. As others have mentioned, try a dimension that doesn't crop and get a frame of that size. One thing I would consider is asking for the original print and rescanning. The current scan was probably done in a basic mode which looks to be causing some drop off and color shift on the edges.
Good luck.
Others have covered dimensions, make black frame, titling, etc. but in PaintShop and I assume Photo Shop you should be able to use the Magic Wand tool to individually circle the people on the ends to lighten them. Otherwise they will probably become even darker when you have prints made with auto scanning equipment at mass producers. (Wal*Mart, Walgreens, etc)

Its a matter of proportions. You CANNOT print an 8x10 from your 3.5x5 image without cutting of the ends. Best to simply try and have it printed at 8x12 and get a frame for it, they are easy to find.
Or print with border - even simpler than shopping for a new frame.

I would dodge the edges in photoshop until the brightness was uniform then I would clone out the distracting hanging objects and then I would crop it to an 8X10 leaving the missing part of the picture at the top. It is then a simple matter to clone the top of the wall to fill in the blank space at the top and voila you have your 8X10. The composition would also be improved by having more blank space on top.
Sounds like cropping issue has been addressed. As to the dark sides if you have Lightroom, Photoshop or similar program use a gradient on just the edges and you can increase the exposure slightly while feathering the edges of the gradient so it looks natural.
