Problems with cropping photo

Guys,

The attached photo (maybe) is an original 3.5 x 5 photo.

It was sent to my wife as she and I are in the photo from years back.
However, she wanted an enlargement to 8x10 at least.
I tried to lighten the photo on the sides but could not get the darkness out of the photo.

Trying to crop the photo now, as the PP made the photo a 14mg size.
I tried the standard crops from PS without luck. Even tried to set my own sizes but to no avail for an 8x10 crop.
I tried to resize the photo in InfranView and again no luck.

Could you either tell me what I am doing wrong or crop it for me to an 8x10
My crops either cut the gentlemen on the ends or cropped them in half.

I tried to send the photo in an earlier post, but could not get it to take and the Ops deleted my post because there was no photo.
I tried twice to send/attach the photo.

Thanks in advance.

Dave

Its a matter of proportions. You CANNOT print an 8x10 from your 3.5x5 image without cutting of the ends. Best to simply try and have it printed at 8x12 and get a frame for it, they are easy to find.

You can't make an 8x10 out of a 3-1/2 x 5 without losing some off the sides. It all about proportions. You could have it strip printed on 8x10 paper by having some white showing top and bottom. I tried to see and you'd lose a guy off either end going to 4x5 (8x10) proportions.

you could also scan it, and then build a larger canvas at that top or bottom or even put some of the canvas on both top and bottom of your image. then you could make it have an 8x10 format and loose nothing. you would do this in photoshop. probably best to make the new canvas black or at least very dark.

The ratio of the original is 8 x 12. To make it an 8 x 10, you would have to cut out the left and right people.

Here it is as an 8 x 12 @ 330 dpi, after some color correction and cleaning.

I had a similar situation - I had taken a group shot at a family reunion and later realized I couldn't make it fit an 8x10. So I made it 10" wide and with the white border underneath I added a title (2014 Lockwood Family Reunion) - the result looked natural and came out perfectly.
I know this doesn't take care of the dark edges but maybe someone can help with that.

Thanks for the reply and good information too!
Where would one find the proportions for reduction as mentioned?

Thanks again and long time no see or hear from you!
All going well in your neighborhood?

Thanks
Dave

Good information, and yes, I have done this is the past with the extra White showing at top and bottom.
Thanks for your time and effort to see what you could do with the photo too!

You CAN print it to fit (width-wise) on an 8x10, but the 8" side will shrink to about 6.66 inches.
At least you get to keep everyone in the shot!
(A custom mat will be required if you mat it, or you'll have a border on the top and bottom if you put it in an 8x10 frame.)

Because the original photo was 3.5x5 you're going to have problems cropping because you can't double the size and come up with 8x10 and because the frame was filled in the original, you can't go bigger and crop to make 8x10. You will have a little space at top and bottom of the 8x10. Make a black 8x10 layer and paste the 7x10 enlargement on top. You'll have .5 inch black border on top and bottom. That's the best you can do if you want to keep the original proportions and not crop part of someone out of the image.

What you show here is 8 by almost 12. Are you sure the original wasn't 4x6? If the original was 3.5x5, please post the original so we can see if anything can be done.

You can do a lot of touch up work to that image and make it better.

Thanks for the reply nikonkelly,

You are right! I was so frustrated with the photo and the problems, this method did not cross my feeble mind!

Thanks again and have a great rest of the weekend!

Thanks longshadow!

When trying to resize, I did see the dimensions you mention.

Thanks for your trying to find a solution to my sizing situation!

Yes, cropping was a problem for me, but now that I read your post and others that have answered me, the solution was really kinda simple.

Yes, the original was 3.5x5. However when I attempted to work on the photo in PS the save enlarged the photo. This was the issue I had.

Thanks again as I have the photo on a thumb drive and will head to Sam's as soon as they open today.
