My biggest gripe about DSLR cameras, and Camera Companies

Michael Andrew has some very good DVDs that explain how all the bells and whistles work and the most common and practical settings for the cameras. He does his teaching in a show and tell format. It has been very helpful for me. I have Attention Deficit Disorder. Learning from books is very difficult for me. His videos have been very helpful for me. He also describes various photo techniques for the construction of a superior photo, by using different lighting and framing options. He also covers the lenses and how they can affect the different aspects of a photo and which lens is most appropriate for certain types of photography. Portrait versus landscape. Wedding versus football game. Get the DVD for your camera. It's well worth the money.

Feel free to add to this GRIPE, if you feel the same way I do.

I started taking photographs 57 years ago with a Zeiss Ikon rangefinder 35 mm film camera.

I developed my own film and printed black and white photos for around 15 years, having moved to a few better cameras in the process.

1st upgrade was a Honeywell Pentax SLR with 35 mm, 55 mm and 135 mm lenses.

Later to a Nikon FM2 with 28 mm, 55 mm, 135 mm, and 200 mm.

Using every conceivable type of film possible.

I did portraiture, weddings, anniversary parties, Nature, you name it I just about photographed it.

This was all a hobby for me, I was only a professionally employed photographer for about 2 months, long story (won't go into that).

My GRIPE is what the camera companies did and did not do, and there missed opportunities when they developed DSLR cameras.

Now I would like to say, my camera bag had many varieties of film always ready for any occasion.

And when I would compose and shoot the image, I stopped using a light meter many years ago, as I was as accurate as my Lunapro would say for a certain scene.

Retired, I was given a DSLR 35 mm size Nikon for a Christmas present, with 2 lenses. It was a bundle.

So here are some GRIPES:

1: After so many years of shooting film, I knew which film to grab for what occasion, and what ASA would work the best for that situation. DSLR camera makers should have given the owners of these cameras, a set of film types, to choose from, and the camera would mimic the results of those types of film. So If I wanted to use a Fuj1 400, I could choose that in a menu, and the camera would act as if I had Fuji 400 in the camera.

2: I have a lot of very good camera equipment, that is now like the old toys in Toy Story, that FM2 is a wonderful camera, and Nikon should have made it possible for owners of their cameras, to send them in to be retrofitted with DSLR innards.

3: Feeling stupid, because the instruction are printed for someone that can read and follow instructions. I cannot, I am a visual learner, I learn by watching, and by doing. My camera has charts and graphs and histograms??????
I would just like to not feel so stupid, and be able to create those great pictures that I did with my film cameras.

4: Using this Nikon DSLR it almost like a chore, the ASA is off the wall, and I try to think what can this camera do for me, I know there are great possibilities, but 1/2 the time, I cannot find the right setting is in in Wrenches, or the Camera body?

5: I believe if a camera company, made the adjustments, that I have stated, being able to mimic film, by choosing the type of film in a menu, VPS, Tri-X, Kodacolor, Fuji 200, etc. I think that would go a long way to help older film camera users be able to accomplish getting the most out of their cameras.
Feel free to add to this GRIPE, if you feel the sa... (show quote)

Film and digital both have a place, and it has certainly taken digital up until about now to catch up with film unless we are looking at medium and large format film cameras. That said your analysis of the situation is not accurate, your arrogant and self absorbed attitudes coupled with insulting comments are totally unprofessional and unhelpful.

You just seem to a bitter, angry old man that has nothing worthwhile left to offer the community. By all means go make your money, but stop spreading uninformed opinions and demeaning others. True professionals do not do that. A true professional is more than just someone that gets paid. A true professional is an inspiration to others. You, Sir, are not that person.

You may find that your future profession is as a pizza delivery person or an Uber or Lyft driver. That may bring your attitudes down by more than a notch or two. Until self driving vehicles take even that income opportunity away.

There are many many editing programs out there that will mimic film, agree the instructions are a bit technical and boring but you can get the jist of what is written and check videos on the web. The camera company's are in the business to make a profit so adding dslr backs to a film camera would be expensive and they would go broke soon, Shoot RAW and you have a huge amount of possibilities to work with, last film is not dead many of us still use and develop our own best thing to do is get our there and use that dslr you will figure it out as you get used to it.

It is not being mean spirited by lending support to an elderly gentleman that gets comments from you punks like “take up sewing.” I don’t need any future profession, Rastus. I make plenty of money with several paid off rental houses and a thriving photography business. But what I don’t let go on this forum are all the “experts” on all the latest and greatest equipment who have never made a dime. Without editing, filters, and high end cameras they would not be a Pfft in the wind.

But we can still keep calling you 'Sharpie' can't we? If we called you 'Wrongy' that could get confusing!

There are plenty of people who have never used film and expect to only see images on a screen, not paper. I have some Fujis that mimic the look of certain films and that menu is meaningless to those people. The eFilm adapter never got past vaporware, as the resolution of real cameras surpassed every prototype they made. Now, the average age of a person wanting to use such a product is 70. Just no incentive to do it no matter how you slice it.

I wouldn't open my door for most of the people on UHH!

Especially Chris T - he'd walk around the living room asking questions like a three year old.

I just downloaded over 600 shots off my 9 year old D3 of eagles I shot today. Shooting in Manual with auto ISO (ASA) 1/5000 at F8 everything came out great. 600 shots divided by 36 images equals 22.8 rolls of film. If processing locally the cost is $18.00 to process and print the final cost would be $410.40. By using DSLR equipment we all avoid the expense. Digital bypassed film years ago. Also cameras and lens are greatly improved over film camera and lens. Steve Perry has two Ebooks that will be a great help to you and Steve Perry you tube videos are very helpful.

Here is a writing opportunity for you. Create a chart that translates DSLR info to old film info. Experiment with the camera and write down the results.

Or just go here: https://vsco.co/store
Personally I think copying the characters of the films of old is overrated

Here we go with the bullying again. He's not even a part of this thread. Why mention his name and then have a jab at him? Grow up please.

When I shot film, I had to carry 4-6 bodies, (high and low speed film, B&W, color print, color slide), in order to have all possibilities at my fingertips when the photo-op presented itself. Then, it was decide which lens to put on which body, and switch all around if I wanted different options, all for the same shot, and never really knowing until a week or more later, (when the rolls were finished, sent out & returned) whether I had actually nailed the exposure/composition/froze the action! Now, 1 DSLR body 2 lenses, and I have more versatility than I could ever have had back then. (Not to mention built-in flash, Wifi, Bluetooth, NFC, AND video!) Still have my FM2 and F3, but they don't see much use any more. (PS- Google "Silver Efex" if you want to change your digital photos to your favorite film look.)

I know that one. With me it was multiple backs to my Bronica SQA now I just carry two bodies so I don't have to change lenses in a dusty sports field, baseball is the dustiest and then rain during football. My Nikon gets a little wet but don't change lenses in the rain. My carrying 2 cameras comes from shooting sports one camera for color and one for BW. I leave the third body at home.
