While I agree that the straps that come with new cameras are less than desirable the only benefit I'm getting out of this discussion is some other straps to check out. Getting rid of the strap that says, Canon, Nikon or Sony is not going to be a deterrent to having your expensive camera stolen. The expensive camera speaks for itself.

Op/Tech straps are very comfortable as well as inexpensive. Low profile. Available from their website, Amazon and many major retailers. Recommended.

Also my favorite!

I know a number of folks that use the sling straps where the camera just dangles at your side. I don’t like my camera flopping around like that, and the neck straps from Canon, etc. definitely result in neck strain. So I. Use a harness by Cotton Carrier.

Are you sure that the N45 has been discontinued? I’ve seen them new, in stores.

They must be new old stock. Tamrac doesn't list them on their web site, and Amazon doesn't show any from anyone. Neither B&H nor Adorama carry them.

The ones I've seen are not the original N45. They're narrower, the pad is made of microsuede, and they lack the beefy buckles. They're but shadows of the originals.

Peak Design (the new model). 100% more comfortable than a factory strap.

I use a variety of carrying systems depending on the camera/lens combination and use. For everyday walking around I use a Domke Gripper strap which I can easily unclip for studio use. It's a wide strap that doesn't slide off your shoulder easily. Plus, I do not like the idea of advertising what camera I am carrying. In the studio I use just a Canon hand strap so that I am not hindered by a neck strap dangling from the body. The Canon hand strap is very comfortable and makes one-handed carrying very easy. For active use, such as hiking or skiing, I use a Cotton Carrier which really secures a full frame body with a Canon EF 28 to 300mm L series lens. For wildlife photography, I use a Canon 7DmkII, a 2x teleconverter and a Sigma 120 to 300mm f/2.8 lens along with a battery grip. This is a rather large, 16" long, and heavy,a little over 10 pounds, combination but it is very versatile. I have found that while it fits on the Cotton Carrier, the easiest way to carry it and have it easy to use, is to use a hand strap and sling it over my shoulder like a shotgun. The idea of a large camera dangling/swinging from a neck strap or shoulder sling in the woods sounds like a good way to damage it.

I do not wear neck straps, they get in my way. That said, if I did get one, it would have a wide padded part that would hit my neck just right.

No worry about dropping the camera off a cliff, out of the helicopter or into the river?
I guess I am not that sure of myself in many situations like those listed.

For security I also put black tape on top of logo and camera model number on camera and lens cap - as well as dump the logo strap, which is extremely uncomfortable anyway.

How do you dare leave the house?

Because I use the camera frequently when traveling, especially overseas, I use an aftermarket strap with a stainless steel cable through it. As others have said, I also did not want my strap to advertise that I am shooting with an expensive Nikon but the same would hold for any good camera. It is pretty much the same reason that I don't wear something like an expensive Rolex watch because there are people who are happy to cut off your hand just to steal the watch.

The strap that came with my Nikon D4S loosened up and the camera nearly kissed the ground. I switched to "BlackRapid" slings. You put it over your shoulder, not your neck. There is a strap to put around your body for stability. (My camera and my 80-400 MM lens can be too heavy for support around your neck, causing headaches). There is an anchor bolt that screws into the tripod connection and hooks onto the strap. This strap is wide enough for comfort. It is strong. The camera hangs by your waist. This way you can grab your camera for that quick one and only shot you would ordinarily miss. You can buy from B & H, or any good camera store.
