I had a bad experience by taking my professional camera and several lens on a 10 day trip to Switzerland. The weight really got to me. My neck and shoulder was always sore.
So for a 9 day adventure trip to Alaska, I picked the Canon SX-50. Much lighter, easy to handle and we loved the pictures. I even made several 4 foot panoramas from them. I will probably never take my other camera on a trip again.

Thanks.

So what choice did you make? Regardless of the choice, I hope you allowed yourself some time to become really familiar with it. The last thing you want to have happen is a brilliant opportunity lost while you fiddle with the controls.....

Olympus TG5 will fit the bill or even one of the earlier models would be a good choice.

The Canon SX50 is a great travel camera. Took mine to Africa last summer and it performed exceptionally well. It won't fit into your pocket, but is small enough to easily carry in your small travel bag or backpack. It is capable of great pictures in a wide variety of settings. I have some amazing pics from our Safari in Kenya. Its successor, the SX60, has increased zoom capability up to 65X. Battery life is good, but I highly recommend getting a second Canon brand battery.

I was hoping others on here would be of the same mind set as myself - from my experience traveling a whole lot to - from and all around Mexico for 5 yrs - I firmly recommend a bridge camera - they have come a long ways from the Panasonic Lumix FZ's I used from '00 to '12 - want your camera handy, secure and drop proof - get an camera/binocular harness - comfortable to wear all day all the time - rides comfortable under a jacket for weather protection.

I am going to Ireland for two weeks and don't want to take heavier larger Nikon D90. Looking for a good compact, water resistant camera that can withstand a fall and good battery life. I Will be doing a lot of hiking and outdoor activities. Any photo/travel suggestions would be welcome. Thanks.

OLY TG-5. Why load yourself down with gear unless its a photo shoot ? Enjoy your trip.

I've been using the TG-5 as my everyday cold weather camera. Fine equipment, many useful features.

But, if I were taking a single camera on a trip, I'd go for something like one of the Leica-lens Lumix fixed lens cameras (e.g., DMC-LX100) which are easily carryable but have a large four-thirds sensor.

The images from the TG-5 just don't compare to those taken with the large sensor Lumix. It's too easy to screw up a shot with the smaller sensor TG-5.

I agree. If you don't need something this rugged (remember, It rains a lot in Ireland), consider the Olympus PEN.

One cardinal rule: Never take your camera anywhere without an ample supply of spare batteries.

Just like others have pointed out, the Olympus TG-5 is one of the best tough cameras. Although the TG-5 is considered one of the best, one of the other brand name tough cameras may meet your needs also. One of the other possibilities would be to rent, with insurance, the Olympus E-M5 OR E-M1 with the 12-100mm or the Panasonic GH-4 or GH-5 and one of their lenses. This way if something happens to the camera and lense, you're covered. Any one of the four bodies and weatherproof lenses will easily weather any of the weather you may encounter. Something to consider.

Thanks Harvey, I have been looking for something like this. This should work for the Canon sx50 that I gave my grandaughter.
