I had a bad experience by taking my professional camera and several lens on a 10 day trip to Switzerland. The weight really got to me. My neck and shoulder was always sore.
So for a 9 day adventure trip to Alaska, I picked the Canon SX-50. Much lighter, easy to handle and we loved the pictures. I even made several 4 foot panoramas from them. I will probably never take my other camera on a trip again.
The Canon SX50 is a great travel camera. Took mine to Africa last summer and it performed exceptionally well. It won't fit into your pocket, but is small enough to easily carry in your small travel bag or backpack. It is capable of great pictures in a wide variety of settings. I have some amazing pics from our Safari in Kenya. Its successor, the SX60, has increased zoom capability up to 65X. Battery life is good, but I highly recommend getting a second Canon brand battery.
