I submitted my pic (don't know if anyone else added any after) and realized the pic I picked isn't the one that was uploaded. What I mean is the cropped shot was on the thumbnail I hit, but the original unedited shot was the one that showed up on the contest page. That's happened a number of times in the past. I use Picasa. Any ideas why this is happening? (I'll keep the pic up there, but it's frustrating)

When you edit in Picasa the edits are only in Picasa until you Save or Save As. You can think of it as a What-If Layer until you decide to make it real.

Although I have not yet submitted any entries in these contests (at least I don't recall having entered any), I believe that some people, who work full time or have been in the process of seeking employment (such as me) have a more difficult time taking the time to go out and hunt for specific subject matter to photograph while others are either professionals or are retired and have an unlimited budget of free time and therefor have an advantage. I have finally succeeded in finding a job (albeit part-time as a school bus driver...passed my CDL tests yesterday) and eventually intend to sign up for a photography course where homework is mandatory and will try to take some pics for upcoming contests, but maybe in the future there could be categories for both current and archived pics. Just my 1.5 cents worth.

I pray that you find employment soon!

Friday, after I passed my tests, I drove back to the company (who had been training me for the last 2 or 3 weeks) and filled out the paperwork (seemed to be about an inch thick...ugh) to officially become an employee. School doesn't start for a few weeks yet and I'll have to wait 90 days before getting benefits and it's 4 hrs pay per day for 157 days unless I get extra charters, but at least I am going to have a predictable income (something I haven't had since last August)

That is something so celebrate! I am so very happy for you!

"Wet" or "Hot and Dry" does not include or exclude ANYone. Creative thinking is encouraged. "Wet" includes birdbaths, baby bathtubs, kids in sprinklers, dogs slobbering, drippy ice cubes or faucets, etc...and all those situations are available regardless of your geographic location. Likewise, "Hot and Dry" includes toast, bonfires, firefighters, wilted plants in the sun, etc. The challenge is to think "outside the box" (which would be another fun category)

Great idea - think outside the box (of chocolates!!!).
Time to chill - you can have archived pics, just try not to.

Probally 75% of the forum participants are (like myself) amatures and some of their best photos are archives, this being said, never have and (maybe) never will enter a photo contest. My opinion only....

Just because I took a picture yesterday, a week ago, a month ago or last year does not mean I was not trying to think creatively when I shot it. Some of us lead very busy lives and finding time to shoot themed pictures on demand only means that we will not be able to participate.

Think of the 'rule' as more of a guideline. It's more challenging to be presented with a topic and shoot it in the given timeframe, but in no way let it stop you from submitting what you have especially if you are in a rush. I would rather you enter than not. And of course good luck to everyone!

Sincere congrats at your new job and passing CDL (although I do not know what this is). Also well done for signing on the course. Seems you have taken on quite a lot. If photography is your hobby it should take place in your spare time. This forum and indeed any competitions you enter are your own free will and should not interfere with your home or work life. It is upto each individual to know how much is too much. Things will get better for you and you have taken the right steps. Best wishes for the future and I look forward to seeing your pictures. Especially as you advance in your course.

Mafadecay, I totally admire and appreciate your time and efforts.....they make us stretch. I have never entered a contest yet, (just can't fit one more thing in), but I love to view the entries! I think we should continue striving to perfect our craft and creativity. You are firm but valiant, I hope all will accept the rules with a grain of salt and keep producing high quality images. Best wishes, WLS

Thank you! I would like to add that I am not running the comp. Credit there must go to St3v3M.

Why not! Given the right mindset they can be fun and can help develop anybodies creative skills. You should try. Why should your best work be in archives. I have not produced my best work yet and I know this because I strive to do the best at everything I do so if it is all down hill from here on I might as well give up now. NEVER!

Themed challenges will help as all improve whether you are a compete novice or a world famous pro. If you really do not have time then by all means enter an archive. There are many worldwide comps that they are completely banned. I would rather somebody enter an archive shot than not enter at all. But I would also like to see each and everyone push that bit harder.

CDL means Commercial Driver's License. There are 2 or 3 types depending on the weight of the vehicle you are driving. I had a Class A CDL from 2004-2007 when I drove a semi (over 26k lbs and/or trailer exceeding 10k lbs), but now I have a Class B for driving a school bus part time. I have not yet signed up for any college photog classes yet, but a few months back I joined a photog club that usually has some kind of educational program at the meetings. I've put a number of pics on "the hog". My current and former avatars won minor awards with online aviation websites (no money, just a baseball cap from one of them and some recognition for a period of time) The pics are also archived on the sites. I'm 0 for 6 in the pics I've submitted for my club's competitions, though.

I think you have to decide and state clearly what the capture date rules are.
Archived photos "not encouraged" does not mean anything.

There either should be no capture date restrictions or it should be mandatory that pictures be taken within the contest time frame.
It's gotta be one or the other. It's way too ambiguous as it stands now.

As an example I randomly checked 10 entries.
Out of those ten, four had the shooting data stripped so you could not tell, and of the other six not a single one was recent. In fact one was taken 7 years ago.

So...which is it? Recent pics only or not?
