Siriusly?! (Woof, woof) someone said raw is easier to spell than jpg but as both have 3 letters, that is not accurate. RAW is easier to say than jpg so that's my choice.

I'm sorry, is that JPG or JPEG?

Apparently, as has been pointed out in other threads, the best search function for this site is Google Advanced. Just restrict the search to www.uglehedgehog.com

This is the first time I've see reference to Google Advanced Search. Awesome!! I got 2,440 results returned using raw vs jpg (restrict site to UHH). And Google changed my jpg to jpeg. Now I have to figure out why. I thought jpg was the new and improved term and that jpeg was passé

From https://stackoverflow.com/questions/23424399/jpg-vs-jpeg-image-formats

The original file extension for the Joint Photographic Expert Group File Format was ‘.jpeg’; however in Windows all files required a three letter file extension. So, the file extension was shortened to ‘.jpg’. However, Macintosh was not limited to three letter file extensions, so Mac users used ‘.jpeg’. Eventually, with upgrades Windows also began to accept ‘.jpeg’. However, many users were already used to ‘.jpg’, so both the three letter file extension and the four letter extension began to be commonly used, and still is.

Today, the most commonly accepted and used form is the ‘.jpg’, as many users were Windows users. Imaging applications, such as Adobe Photoshop, save all JPEG files with a ".jpg" extension on both Mac and Windows, in an attempt to avoid confusion. The Joint Photographic Expert Group File Format can also be saved with the upper-case ‘.JPEG’ and ‘.JPG’ file extensions, which are less common, but also accepted.

Good for you. My threads tend to be learning tools.

I use both. I wasn't aware that one was falling into disuse. I probably use JPEG more in writing since that's the way it's pronounced. But I use JPG for file extensions because it's less typing.

Why should they do that now? Haven't done it before? Posters love this type of thing.

I think Jim Bob is doing a little chain pulling here. I seem to recall spending a few rainy days following the last pissing contest this subject stirred up. It does help to sort the white hats from the black (and all the grays, too). 😉

And... raw is not an acronym like JPG is, so raw is lower case...and JPG is uppercase ;)

The real plus about shooting raw is of course..... there are nifty hats, mugs & tee's everywhere!!

There is always a point to my posts, sometimes subtle, sometimes in your face. But always a point.

Raw is like a religion - you must believe in it, accept it and practice it - and preach others to follow ! 8-)

Well, I do believe in the truth, I believe in the light, and enlightenment, but maybe that's why I'm an Orthodox Aformatist!

The RAW from my dig cam are so flat. I don't understand what all the hoopla is about.

RAW is "flat" because that is what they are supposed to be, a blank slate. Shooting RAW encourages you to move on from snapshots into real digital photography.

Seems like I saw one post on this topic but it was not very helpful. Would someone please explain which one I should be using. Thanks.

Having fun with the newbies? You're not going to stop, are you?
