Newbie, have a D70S and gonna upgrade. Between a D3300 or D3400 or D5500.

I have two Nikon D7200's and a D5200. I shoot sports and activities professionally which is why I have 2 D7200's. The D7200 has great low light capabilities. The D5200 has a view screen you can view from the front of the camera just by flipping it around. The cameras you mentioned do not go above ISO/AS 6400 and the D5200 has the same ISO/ASA max. The D7200 can go to 25600. You can make a nice 8x10 from the image at that ISO/ASA. I had a D3200 and it was ok but again the ISO/ASA was only max at 6400. All of these mentioned do have 24 mpx.
I would go with the D7200. I have seen them from Nikon direct for under $800.00for a rebuilt Nikon. I have also seen them going for around $750 new from B&H. Personally if you got the bucks try the D850 it's 45 mpx.
As for motor to drive an older lens you will have to check with the spec sheets on all of the above mentioned bodies. They all do autofocus with the lenses that come with them if you buy with lens. Talk the sales rep into selling a body with the 18 to 155 mm 3.5 lens. They'll talk sales if you call B&H on the phone.

I would try to go with the D7xxx. Then you could use the camera and buy glass at a later date.

According to Ken Rockwell: "There is a focus motor in the D7500, so it works with every AF lens made since 1986.".

I love mine.

It doesn’t work with AI/AIS lenses is my understanding but it definitely has an AF motor.

Correct me if I’m wrong (and I have been before) but as I understand it, the D5xxx and D3xxx series cameras don’t have an internal focus motor, but rely on the focusing motor built into the lens, whereas the D7xxx, D500, D8xx series all have an in-body focusing motor that allows them to use older Nikon AF lenses that don’t have the motor built in.

Of the three . . . The D5500 is the best . . . But if you can come up with more money . . . I'd go with the 7200/7500 . . .

First off, Welcome to the hog.

I shoot with a d3300. got it when they first came out....My granddaughter waited and got the d3400. Not much difference between the two. The d5500 is better and not that much more than the 3400....The 3300 is way down in price now.....If you have the money, go for the 5500. I would read the reviews and specs and then decide what you really want.

The D7500 does not have the tab required to set the aperture on the AI lenses and will not autofocus those non-CPU lenses. Not sure what AIS is.

My understanding also.

My comment was regarding the older MF lenses which can meter on a D7200 but not the D7500.

AIS was a later upgrade from the AI but before AF.

Thank you. I found many Ai-S lenses made in the 1980, but only two AIS lenses; a 35/f2.8 and a 28/f3.5. Also from the 1980s.

The D3xxx and D5xxx Series have no internal focus motors.

I glad to see that you’re still using the venerable D70s. It was my first Nikon digital body. One of the advantages of this series was the built in focus motor so I could use excellent and cost effective Nikkor AF lenses. These lenses do not have electronic focus motors and rely on the motor drive in the body. The D3xxx and D5xxx as well as the D7500 do not have focus motors in the body. They also lack the aperture feeler so that even older Nikkor manual focus lenses will not couple with the light meter. For interest, I am still using a Nikon 50mm f/1.8 Series E lens with my D810 and it allows me to shoot in aperture priority, manual and the body detects focus and shows the green confirmation “dot”. Nikon excels at backwards compatibility.
I glad to see that you’re still using the venerabl... (show quote)

The D7500 does have an internal focus motor. But may not be compatible with some Nikon vintage lenses?
