Think of infinity as a 'never ending distance/object'. If you can imagine the number of grains of sand on earth, it is not approaching infinite. The earth has a finite volume and a grain of sand has a minimum volume. If you divide the volume of the earth by the volume of a grain of sand, you still have a 'real number'. It is not infinite.

About 30 years ago, we were shopping at the Pickering Town Center looking for a new stove. The salesman jumped right in to help, and explained that the stove had an infinite temperature range. I told him that if we were to live forever, we would never appreciate that feature. He had no clue about what we were talking about.

For cameras, to get back on topic, many camera lenses have a couple of index marks indicating the range of focus for different f-stops. I usually set the upper index mark on the 'infinity' mark so that, for example, for an f-16 aperture, it may be everything from infinity to say 30' is in focus rather than set the focus distance at infinity so that only 60' to infinity is in focus.

Dik ... sounds like you've found a way to limit infinity on your camera ...

Now, then - on that fanciful stove with an infinite temperature variable index .... it sounds to me like that's a fire waiting to happen ... don't go NEAR it!

When all the stars and planets are destroyed and not even a speck of dust is left, what you got is infinity, the only thing infinite is space, nothing else.

Oh, yes ... The Importance of Being Earnest ... is a clever play, with an infinite number of interpretations ...

Space is unlimited ... yes ... and so is a Black Hole ....

Infinity is a way of defining that which is unlimited ....

Not sure how stars and planets - and their ultimate destruction? ... figures in, though, Earnest ... as important as that may seem to you ....

Dust is dust ... and yes, that can be infinite, too ...

Or, it could be, David ... Buzz and I - have never crossed paths, or - traveled the same paths, either ....

Which all brings to mind ... probably - all paths are infinite in number, too ....

Infinity is the furthest one can rotate the focus ring in that direction without damaging the lens.

An Infinity is some where between the bottom of the line around $35,000 to near $100,000.

What I love is most lenses can focus past infinity... The future? Another earth? Another galaxy?

They can, can they, Plan?

How many lenses do YOU have, with this capability?

Which ones are they, Plan?

And once you turn it too far, Jeff ... you've not only damaged the lens - but you've passed Infinity ????

Oh, I like this one, D ... assigning dollar values to a concept ....

So, for you, D ... the bottom line of Infinity is $35,000 and the top line is $100,000 ....

Now, wait ... Infinity - is infinite ... you can't assign a top-dollar value to it ... then, it no longer is infinite ...

Make sense, D?

Whatever it takes to keep Buzz in focus.

Is this your work, Spike?

As a poem - it's really nice work ...

But, conceptually - it fails on two points ....

1) Infinity cannot be held in the palm of your hand.

2) Eternity cannot be capsulized in an hour.

Like Infinity ... Eternity - has no cap ....

However, you CAN see the world in a grain sand - if you want ....

AND - you can see all of Heaven - in a wild flower ....

But, then - these are all fantasies of the mind ... in your mind, you can make ANYTHING happen ....

Infinity .... and Eternity, too ... are scientific terms ... they cannot be applied to fantasies ...

Chris, the destruction of the universe is not important to me at all, the point is that space is and will always be here, infinitely. According to some scientists, black holes have never been proven to exist, like all science, it is a theory. According to scientists space was devoid of any matter, even dust
eons ago, everything came from nothing, another theory that doesn't make sense.

I would ask Buzz Lightyear but I don't see him around at the moment. Of course he thinks there is, To infinity and beyond. How far is beyond though? Good question.

Dennis ... I suspect that equation would make more sense if it read ... beyond - all the way to infinity ....

Since - beyond ... needs an object (for it to BE beyond) ... whereas - infinity - has no end ... so beyond infinity - doesn't make a whole lotta sense!

My eyesight is failing, so there's little to be gained from squinting beyond infinity... maybe best to set that as the 'farthest limit'.

You can set your eyes at - farthest limit, can you, Dik?

Where is this setting, exactly?
