I think it is pretty well accepted that if there are muliple subjects, the preference for focus goes with the closest - and actually, having both in focus is generally not accepted either unless they are actually on the same plane (unavoidable) or for some other mitigating artistic reason. As always in photographic art, there is room for conjecture here.
