If you think the Colorado tax is onerous, check that graphic from Indiana. By that law, if you come visit me, buy a camera (or even a cheap lens cap for the one you lost) you have to report it and pay the taxes! Now that stinks!

Only if I pay less than 7% tax wherever you are.

I never received a letter from them stating they were reporting me to my state Illinois. But as one to this forum has already said maybe Colorado is leaning on them. Or maybe it is a new policy that instituted this year, maybe even due to IRS telling them.

Actually, I bet if you read far enough into the fine print, Amazon and other on-line retailers not on state the above, but go on to say that any sales or use taxes are the responsibility of the purchaser to compute and pay to the appropriate local tax authority

You did it. Treaded on the sacred cow "B & H". You were blamed because you did pay the tax. Now your are every thing they can through at you. But thanks for telling us what was inevitable. The stated want the tax and are going after the big mail order houses to get the tax.

Undigested food, taken across state lines could be taxed, as well misunderstood sarcasm.

Zero tax here (except 9% rooms/meals) in NH. Now, businesses are a different thing.

I am not unusual in that I buy higher priced camera gear over the internet to save the sales tax. It's not a conspiracy against local outlets - I just like to save money. I m a law & order guy. So, if the state you live in mandates taxes to e paid on online purchases, then so be it.
I would prefer this forum be dedicated to photography and leave the political editorials to other sites.

To sum up what I am reading on this post it appears that their is such confusion about sales tax that no one knows what to do.
The IRS collects tax from most American's and then starves the states. And then a state like PA starves parts of the states politically.
The schools of their major cities in PA have not gotten what they need from the state back. Our current government is after school lunches
for very poor children. They just borrowed debt for trillions to advance tax relief for the very richest people. And they will be coming
for SS and medicare reductions soon. Tax should go to our states and our country for what we really need.

The IRS does not collect sales tax. Only the individual states collect sales tax. The federal government has nothing to do with it.

I'd love to be in court when somebody tells the judge that Amazon said they don't have to pay taxes.

I believe, unless you just got off the boat, that you already knew that. And if you didn't, remember that ignorance of the law is no defense.

Well, Bill De: The state of Indiana and Amazon have a tax code arrangement that essentially works like this: if a product is sold by Amazon, they collect the tax. If a product is sold through Amazon, but is not their product, but rather another entity, they do not collect tax. Simply as that. And by the way...Amazon has a huge facility in Indiana, and they negotiated with the State of Indiana over a prolonged period of time, and arrived at the arrangement on taxes as I outlined. I don't appreciate your derogatory comments about "just got off the boat", nor the "ignorance of the law". This is an open forum so please respect the opinions of others without negativity and demeaning references.

Our local store will match prices with others including B&H. Just take an ad or the sales page in and they will accept it. I like to support our local stores.

Two weeks ago I went to my local Staples store with my B&H quote for an Epson V600 scanner. I showed them the price with free shipping and no tax for the scanner. I asked them to match with me walking out the door with that price match. They looked at it and said yes. They struggled to price it backwards to come up with the price PLUS state tax so that my price out the door is what I was asking for. They gave up at the ACTUAL price but sold it to me for $.75 less than B&H price. I won and the state got their tax. There must be enough mark up for it all to work! The scanner did not exist in the store so it was shipped to them and I went back to pick up. Better they protect my product than have it sit on my door step! No porch pirates for me.

Sorry Indiana, but I think Bill De made his statements in the kindest possible manner. If I was advocating cheating on sales/use taxes that others have to pay, I wouldn't expect many people to respect my opinion.
